Window winder S1
Discussion
Bad day today, the drivers window started sticking so I popped the card off and took a look. The cables were literaly tied in knots and beyond repair. That's the first problem.
Sourcing a replacement window gearbox and cables has proven impossible and then when I went to put the card back on I couldn't get the opener to attach (it fell off when the door card came loose). Am I right in thinking it should attach to a small plastic clip and loop under the latch? Well the plastic clip was in 2 pieces and it is clearly broken.
So now I have a window that won't open and a door that can't be opened from inside! In addition that broken clip also holds the exterior handle rod in place, so shutting the door makes that jump out too!
So the car is currently "in disgrace" as I cannot open the driver's door using the handle, I CAN (luckily) reach inside the door itself (card off) and lift the latch so I can get out but cannot guarantee I'll be able to open the door from outside later.
Sooo - does anyone know where I might be able to find a driver's door manual window mechanism and a driver's door lock (latch)?
David Gerald were great, I may end up having a set of electric windows retro-fitted, it won't be the cheapest way to resolve this but it might be the fastest!
The door lock/latch mechanism seems very Heath Robinson - are they all like that?

In the short term you could tie a piece of cord around the latch mechanism inside the door, if you see when you operate the exterior handle which part moves up, then leave the end of the cord dangling inside you can then escape.
I am sure someone on pistonheads classifieds was selling interior trim and bits from an S series, will try to find the link.

Thanks Mike - I've e-mailed him about the lock/latches..Heres the link, its an S3, but there could be something useable.
Well the string trick has worked a treat so I can now refit the door card and be assured I can get in & out when I want to.
I tie-wrapped the exterior handle rod in place so that's going nowhere and means I am able to open the door from outside too so I am in a much better place now than I was a couple of hours ago thanks to the kind advice of you guys.
Does anyone have a pictorial "how to" guide on how the actual interior door release cable attaches to the latch? I think I can see how it is supposed to go but I could do with some confirmation....and I am loathe to take the passenger door card off to now LOL
I suspect I am going to struggle a little without that little plastic clip, but I'll take another look tomorrow to see if I can bodge something.
Thanks again for the help.

Is it a stiff "piano wire" type cable? on my S3 it is just pushed through a hole in the lock mechanism and bent at a little more than 90 degreesJulesprivate said:

Is it anything like any of these?Bizzarely I think the plastic clip may have been a red herring. I still can't figure how to make the interior door handle work as the movement of the cable is in the horizontal plane bu tthe release latch needs to move vertically so not really sure how that works.
I have managed to find a second hand winder mechanism so hopefully that'll be arrive next week so I can fit that and have another go at the interior handle.
I doubt that a picture of the interior latch with release cable attached exists but if anyone has one please let me know as I can't work out in my head how to put it back!
Still not feeling brave enough to take the passenger card off to look as I reckon I'd end up with 2 bits of string..

Fitted the replacement winder mechanism today, much easier than I'd anticipated, took around 2 hours all in which is pretty good. I think I'll put off the electric window conversion for a bit and see if I still feel the same in the summer (assuming we have one next year).
It'll be nice to have a working window again so I can adjust the mirror, stop the car steaming up and listen to the exhaust note properly when the roof is up!
I never did figure out how the interior door release goes back together, so still have a piece of string with a ball on the end that I just pull to let myself out.... will be interesting at MOT time LOL.

Don't worry, mine went thriugh the MOT and it has no door panels and 2 bits of string, one of which must have fallen off at some point cos it was on the floor when I collected it.
I keep putting off trying to assemble the doors. With or without the central locking solenoids which are still in a box in my shed.
