I'd like to take my GF to a "posh" restaurant for her bday, rather than the usual chain places. Something around the £100 a head for dinner.

As I'm relatively new to the area, I have no idea where to go. Any recommendations?

Well, decided not to wait till the birthday as the fishermans lodge seemed pretty reasonable price wise, so we are booked in for Tuesday, I'll report back.

The Black Door looks nice, so that could be a go-er for the birthday.

I've been on a plane with David Cassidy. ( I bet YOU don't know who he is !!), Is that impressive or what?

That's nothing, I own a car that used to be owned by the son of Michael Elphick, now that is impressive.

Intrepid Fisherman's Lodge reporter calling in...

It was quite good all in all.

Atmosphere was very nice, a quiet night though and the dining room itself seems to be a little bit cramped, so it might get very noisy on a busy night. Tables are closer together than I like, but my gf liked that (I think she likes to earwig )

Couldn't understand a word the wine waiter said, but we managed well enough by judicious nodding.

Nibbles were very nice. A very very nice duck and mash pre-starter as we sat down to the table.

Food wise, I had scallops to start, Kate had pigeon. Scallops were nicely cooked, but as I don't really like seafood that much, no idea why I chose them. The Pigeon was slightly tough, but tasted good, and was a large portion for a starter.
Main meal was a medium beef fillet for both of us. Tasted lovely but slightly dry and overdone for me, the potato side was also overdone. Very nice red wine sauce.
Dessert was the selection for 2 to share. Nicely presented and all the dishes went down well, apart from a lemon sorbet which was way way way too sharp. (and a coffee ice cream, which i'm sure was nice but as I hate coffee, I can't really say) but out of the 8 dishes, they all seemed a variation on an ice-cream/sorbet/mousse and had nothing particulary special or different.

Cost came out at £150 for both of us, including a couple of drinks each and tip. As nice as the place is, the food wasn't worth that sort of price in my opinion, if it had come in at £100 i'd have been very happy, at £150 the food needs to be a bit more special.

We'd certainly go back again and give them another try in the future, but it isn't on my "must go back tomorrow" list.
