We went out in central Nottingham for lunch today and very pleasant it was too. Plenty of people around and a good buzz. But as soon as the shops shut it became like a ghost town. I don't think it used to be like that.
Yes, it does resemble a curfew but I soon found out they pack into the Trip to Jerusalem for a cheeky one before going home. Guess how I know...Saturday evening just gone we took a trip to Nottingham to see Robin Hood (Panto) at the Theatre Royal (it was very good BTW)
My olds had gifted us a meal at Mogal E Azam, those of you who know Notts will know it's on the Theatre's doorstep. Planned to park at the Multi-Storey on Upper Parliament Street for convenience. Coming in to Notts from Derby Road/M1 direction we saw a dot matrix display saying 'spaces' for said carpark (as we were passing it) so drove down Maid Marion Way to loop around and come back up. When we get back to Upper Parliament Street roundabout a different matrix board decided it was now 'full', but I said sod it, we're going to try getting in anyway. This resulted in an unplanned 1 mile loop around to get back to the multi-storey, with no one letting us move lanes, completely and utterly stressing me out in the process.
After parking up we went to the curry house, stating we had booked a table for earlier, but that we got caught up navigating the city centre. We were very glad for them serving us really speedily so we made the panto JUST in time. This was my Christmas gift to the wife, who turns in to a 4 year old every December, and was nearly ruined by this blasted new road set up. I texted Mum the next day to tell her we'd enjoyed the evening etc, and mentioned the city centre road nightmare we had, her response was that after her and Dad last went in to the centre by car they decided it was a 'never again' experience for them too. Also, leaving the multi-storey at the pay and display machine another couple were chatting about the dot matrix displays giving conflicting messages, another thing confirming it wasn't just us.
In our efforts to get back up to the multi-storey we ended up being pushed on to Canal Street by someone not letting us move lanes right to get back up to U.P Street. Now awaiting a bus lane fine, great!
If I ever meet the clown who signed off these new roads around the city centre I hope they have their running shoes on. Notts County Council are even bragging about how many Bus Lane tickets they've issued on Canal Street, isn't this telling them something, or do they think the entire population of Notts are brain dead?!
Last time we'll venture to Notts centre by car, I suspect next year we'll be seeing a Panto elsewhere.

We went to the Xmas market last week, parked in the new fancy multi story - which was quite a nice car park - signs telling you exactly where the spaces were, lights above each space in red or green to indicate full or empty etc.
However driving in Nottingham is a complete pain in the arse, I despise it.

I've just emailed the Broadmarsh section of the council.
The bus gate (with 20+ signs warning you before you get there plus a signed escape route) is now just 200 yards. To avoid it you need to do a 1.5 mile detour. That must mean hundreds of thousands of extra miles driven for no real reason.
The only way to enter the swanky new car park is to approach from London Road, then Canal Street & then turn right into the car park. It's plain mad.
It's camera mad in that few hundred yards too, maybe 6 or 7!
I don't think it can be true, but I'm being told the new bus station is too low to accept double deckers. As I say, it can't be true but I did chuckle at the thought of when they did a test entry

I am a serial moaner About 10% of us men are red green colour blind. Why not light on/light off? However driving in Nottingham is a complete pain in the arse, I despise it.
Nottingham is one of the better cities to drive in.....but only if you are very local with local knowledge. All satnavs are inaccurate, be they Google maps or inbuilt satnavs.
We no longer drive into Nottingham, we're lucky enough to live a few minutes walk from a train station and it's £4.60 return so it's a no brainer.
The only down side is the walk up into the centre from Nottingham station is grim, the whole area around the old Broadmarsh centre is a derelict ghost town of boarded up shops and is quite depressing, the rest of Nottingham centre, Hockley, etc are quite vibrant and we tend only to ventre in for eating/entertainment rather than shopping, as Meadowhall is a much easier option for that and a similar time away.
Hopefully the Broadmarsh area can be redeveloped, there a few interested parties with some good ideas so fingers crossed.

I was at uni (Trent because I was a lazy little st who didn't try at school!) in Nottingham 1999-2002 and still enjoy a visit every now and then. It's a great city for a session and if the Mogal E Azam is still anywhere near as it was back then it's a good choice for a standard British ruby. Their Peshwari naan used to be absolutely excellent.
Last time I was down there in the Summer I couldn't quite believe the state of Broadmarsh but hopefully they'll get it redeveloped fairly swiftly. And the area around the station was much nicer than it used to be. I had a mate who lived in Portland House when all it had on the ground floor were Carringtons Chippy and (IIRC) a William Hill bookies. The little ale house that they've got there now is a great boozer.

RE Mogal E Azam. As per my above post we went there Saturday eve, and we both thought it was spectacular as ever. Especially considering they had to rush the food out to us. RE The Broadmarsh. I wouldn't bank on it, how many decades has a replacement Broadmarsh been on the cards? When I was in secondary school (I'm now 44) it was being planned. I should have a bit more faith in things, I know!
Broadmarsh won't happen in a rush.
We were at panto on Saturday too, but the earlier showing (it was ok but not a patch on Biggins or Chuckle bros). Stayed in town for some grub and got back about 7ish (kids had a F1 league race scheduled). We took the bus, I figured it would be pretty bad with xmas shopping but local news have said the queuing to get out of the Vic Centre was so bad people were leaving their cars overnight.
Second time in town this year, we're not regulars, the bits that are finished on the Broadmarsh do look a lot better, I did struggle to get my bearings a bit on the bus with the new layout.

RE Mogal E Azam.
I live behind Maid Marian Way so need to walk past the Laguna, 4550 Miles from Delhi, Calcutta Club, Maharaja's Retreat, Memsaab & at a push Cumin to get to the Mogul. As a result not been there for years. All of the Maid Marian Way curries are excellent...Calcutta Club possibly one of the best in the land.
I once made the mistake of taking the wife shopping in Nottingham for her birthday.....christ that was an expensive day out
Ended up going to a buffet place that was downstairs in a building i think. It appears to be called Cosmo
Long day but she had a great time so that was the main thing.

I don’t live in Nottingham anymore but my parents still do. I go to watch County with my Dad a few times a year, we park in the Meadows so drive through the city centre. I have to get my Dad to tell me which way to go and what lane to be in through the city centre, it’s a bloody nightmare!
