I know it says its a classic meet, but what exactly is it?
Just taking a wild guess, I reckon it might be a classic car meet at a pub

Saabstudent said:
oh and whats this starkholmes - is it a regular meet or something?
Yes, every other Tuesday at the White Lion pub, Starkholmes Road, Starkholmes. Near Matlock & Matlock Bath.

The next Starkholmes meet is due this Tuesday from 7pm onwards.

BUT, it looks like a few of us are going to Shardlow instead, probably we'll all go to Shardlow as a 'one off' instead of Starkholmes. It's just as local for pretty much all of us.

Sounds good to me... we got an address on that?

The pub is pretty much on the sharp bend shown in Back Lane. Main Car Park is around that bend at the back of the pub.

Cheers bud... in central Derby so won't be too hard to find at all.

Very easy to find.

If exit Derby and then Alvaston on the London Road just keep going on the old A6 rather than take the A50 link for a slightly more interesting bit of tarmac - but take some car as the speed stasi are known to target most of that road. Watch out through Alvaston as well - the point at which the 30 changes to a 40 has been moved out a bit.

For an even more interesting, though longer, route, head south and crosws the A50 heading towards the Crewe and Harpur pub at Swarkestone. Before you get there take the rather hidden left hand bend for Weston on Trent which, absent traffic, will allow a gentle workout.

Into Weston and turn at the junction to Aston on Trent and then on to Shardlow. You will re-join the old A6 at the Dog and Duck in the middle of Shardlow. Turn right, keeping strictly to the limit just in case on the long straight that will open up before you. When you get to the light controlled bridge, cross it and then turn immediately right which will lead you to the Old Crown.

Unlikely that you will be able to park at the front of the pub to drive past it down a steep slope, round a blind left hand bend and the almost immediately left into the main car park.

The carpark isn't huge and it starts to fill up by 7pm. There were various vehicles at the last meeting including a 1924 model T Ford, an Ultima, 3 Cobra replicas, a 55 Chevy truck and my 53, a superb E type jag, 2 TR6's and a GT6, frog-eye sprite and a few others from the 40's, 50's & 60's + 2 or 3 old motor bikes. Not sure if they serve food other than bar snacks.
I'll be there about 6:15 to get a parking space !.
Look forward to seeing you there.

I might be able to get to Shardlow - depends on pesky clients. I think the wedge would quite like the trip!

I may go in the t900 but not sure yet. I'll know if I'm going nearer the time. Andy, you can blast down the A50 I'll listen out for you!

Well i'll be there, well at the classic car meet anyway.
Looks an easy trip for me, if a bit boring, a46 and a50.

If you consider cutting across from the A46 to Kegworth (J24 M1) on the cross country roads it could be a bit more interesting.

Keyworth/Bunny/East Leake/West Leake/Kegworth perhaps.

Or Wysall/Costock/East Leake/West Leake/Kegworth

or a little further south

Willoughby-on-the-wolds/Wymeswold/Rempstone and on to meet the A6 just north of Hathern.

Turn right there to take the short dual carriageway towards Kegworth OR do a left and immediate right to head off across country again, then after just about a mile turn right to Long Whatton. Through LW and Diseworth keeping to the 'main' road and eventually you will come to a T junction with the A453 near the East Midlands Airport.

Turn left. Cross a small roundabout and take the right at the lights near the Donington Park main entrance. Follow the road into Donington - watch your speed down the long hill just in case they have the locl speed traps out - not seen one recently so it may be time ...

Through a set of lights in the middle of the village and on out to the first roundabout. Now a choice.

Either keep straight on rond the next small roundabout that goes nowhere else and up to the junction over the A50 from where you would take the second exit towards Shardlow OR use the Tom Tom route which would mean left at the first roundabout along a new road Tom Tom does not know about.

Cross the next roundabout and then take the next right - small obscure junction before you reach the bridge. That turns immediately right and you end up on a single track road mainly used by dog walkers and horse riders so best take it easy. (Plus it is bumpy!). Keep on that, under the A50 and you will apprach the Old Crown from the back. As you comne into the area of buildings you will see a sharp RH bend ahead. The pub car park is a few yards before it on the right.

But if you simply approach through Kegworth, cross the M1 at J24, take the short blast on the Dual C to the first major junction (Long Eaton/Castle Donington. Take the exit on the diagonal (actually the 4th exit as there is one immediately adjacent to the A50 exit as you arrive at the roundabout from the A50). Ignore the dead end next to the Chinese Restaurant and the turn to the Old Crown is to the left just before the light controlled bridge.

So, a few options. Hope the traffic is clear for you ....

My old hooning route from when I lived in the area.

If anyone is planning on a route like this, any idea of an eta at the A6 at Hathern? Take me about an hour to get there in the S from Sheffield. Looks a more interesting end of the route than just using the M1..

The only drawback being you will have gone well past the target destination to get to Hathern! And that bit back to Shardlow is OK but not the most interesting part of the run from the A46.

But then from Sheffield I can't think of too many alternatives especially at that time of day. Maybe A38 down to Willington (just south of the A38/A50 junction) then Willington to Swarkestone (but now a 50 limit I think, not done it for a while). Head back towards Derby at the Crewe and Harpur junction then first right to Weston on Trent. On to Aston on Trent and into Shardlow that way.

Just checked on the map and Shardlow isn't where I thought it was so you're right, would have gone way past..

Looks like I'll be planning an interesting XC route by myself then..
