Nottingham... and do you love your city?

A mate of mine from school lived in The Park in a massive house, suits of armour in the hallway and a night club in the basement, it was a mega house!
We used to stop there after a night out in town. I can remember one Christmas on the way back to my mates in the park we had a massive snowball fight by the Robin Hood statue by the castle with a load of strangers. Oh happy days!

A good friend of mine was mugged at knife point at the castle gate end. Do I remember correctly that it is all private and that Plod doesn't patrol the area?We used to stop there after a night out in town. A bit of trivia.
I lived at 13 (now 12a!) Park Terrace from when I born (1957) to 1962.
No. 14 was next door. Stephen Frears lived there, Mr Frears with sticky out ears in Lily the Pink and director of Philomena.
He remembers watching Hungary beat England 7-1 in 1954 on my parents television.
Great grandparents lived in Pelham Crescent, other great grandparents in Clare Valley.

It was 15 Pelham Crescent, where my great aunt used to make jigsaw puzzles. And 4 Clare Valley.
Many's the time I've played at the various tennis clubs - and the squash club.

I think 4 Clare Valley is on the corner? Lots of work being done in the whole of the Park. (Especially next to big ears’ house!) I’ll post some pictures later And 4 Clare Valley.

I come from the South East, but moved to Nottingham in the 90s for Uni.
I remember being amazed at how different people were, on a night out. Mainly, girls wanted weren't massively up their own backsides and far more chatupable (that's a Uni education for you).
Until about 2002-3 the city felt affluent, vibrant and exciting in a post-industrial kind of way. There were loads of good restaurants, clubs and bars. Okay, they were 99% funded by the money derived from "nightclub dancefloor sales" but they were there nevertheless.
After 2003 it all became a bit grim. Lots of reasons. But in the past couple of weeks the vibe in town has occasionally been been like the old days. Don't get me wrong, it still has a long way to go to be back to where it was and the money no longer seems in evidence. But there have been occasional glimpses.

15 Pelham Crescent. I can see from the windows it was designed by TC Hine! One of Nottingham’s great architects.

58 years ago, I began my training as an Architect and I was working on the studio to the right with the 'butterfly ' roof.I seem to remember the client was a Dr Frears ( father ? ) who drove a vintage Bentley - as you would if living in the Park. The boss's mother lived next door down.
I once went to one old house and the old lady owner had black jet ornaments throughout - a very Victorian lifestyle that had never moved on. Not unusual in those days.
