Some great architecture involved

The Star Brewery (Shippos), Home Ales & Kimberley were all fantastic buildings.

Man, you've missed a treat
We always said it was made with water from the Trent biggrin
Hence the term ‘sttos’
More likely the River Leen. And the reference is mostly about the day after hehe

Always the day after laugh

O/T - you don’t happen to know a group of lads (I say lads but they’re well into their 50’s) who have old and knackered Triumph Spitfires locally?
Ah! The rusties....no, sorry hehe

Surprised no one has mentioned Shipstones Ales yet. Taken over by Greenalls in 1978, I didn't drink in those days, so I have never tasted a genuine pint of Shippos.
I've drunk gallons of it in the past in my favourite, long gone, pub. The Narrow Boat on Canal St.
That pub didn’t last very long. It was a cracker though. Had a skin full there before seeing the Pirates at the college over the road. We were shakin all over.

Sal and the Trip were my go to places when I started work and earning money in 1985 - happened to be a bit of a grebo so fitted in.
Sal on a Saturday lunchtime then down to the market square for either more booze and/or a scrap with some Mods.
Then I progressed to the Palais rock night on Fridays (happy hour 20p per pint), and Palais Saturday dinner / night.
Palais closed down and we all took root in the Tap n Tumbler before going to Rock City every Friday.

Halcyon days…
Do you remember the large globe that was atop the Palais? At 2am when the Palais kicked out I climbed up there and sat on it. The police were called and they were not as impressed as I was.

The Palais had a revolving dance floor. I’d been a few times before I realised, just thought I was more pissed than usual.

It was quite an old pub in the 80s when I used it wasn't it?
Would that be the fine establishment People's College? I got kicked out of there.
It wasn’t as old as it looked. I went to the opening night. Same as the Castle pub, it only opened in 1980. Yes, the people’s college….now disused and ready for demolition I reckon.

preferring Home Ales in the Corner Pin.
I had a few beers in there the Sunday it closed for good. A little further along Clumber Street used to be the Crystal Palace. Ladbrokes have just vacated that building and the remains of the Palace signage are visible for the first time for maybe 40 years.

It was a cute looking boozer

A bit further along is the Red Lion.
It was just the Lion....and the sign was a white lion. Lovely tiled building that is an amusement arcade.

In the '80s I lived in Bulwell. One Sunday evening (so back then we only had 3 1/2 hours) we walked to Canning Circus & had a swift half in every pub. Back then that was 25 pubs.....hardly any of them are there now.

Ah.. The Lion.
Was thrown out of their as I was slightly over-refreshed, bumped into my g/f who had been dancing in Colmans just round the corner, resulting in an agreement that we might take our relationship seriously.
We met the following night, resulting in us getting engaged and subsequently happily married for 36 years. ( RIP ).
Nottingham means a lot to me still.
Happy and sad in equal measures to read that

I moved from Bulwell two years ago after a forty four year stint there !
Remember the Highbury Vale and the Bull and Butcher? That’s where I spent most of my time.

The female/male ratio has always been a a myth. Maybe it came about because of QMC, which was/is the largest teaching hospital in Europe and hence lots of nurses? Amazing how these myths stick for decades once founded.
It really wasn’t a myth in the late 70s early 80s on a Thursday (pay) night. There were huge cigarette and textile factories that employed nearly exclusively women. The sight was truly something to behold in Yates’s. Thursday was a big night out!

2 sMoKiN bArReLs needs to know whether he has to write to the council about lamentable enforcement of the rules. Rules that apply to all.
They have a system that now blocks me hehe

People with cars have money to spend, those on trams and buses not so much.
You'll need to wear protective clothing if you risk parking in the new Broadmarsh car park. It has been cleverly designed with just enough room between the slats for pigeons. Crikey
