Regarding the marks on the paintwork, I'm not taking the car to a bodyshop, I'll have it machine polished out, as I had to last summer when someone at a car show managed to drag their shoulder bag all the way from the rear quarter light along and down the air intake channel to the rear light leaving several 18" scratches in the lacquer. Thankfully 458s have a fairly thick layer of clear coat.

For the 20 minutes before I left there was a group of 3-4 people stood at the rear of car, a couple sat on the fencing behind it. I walked past and the people vaping were intentionally exhaling over the rear of the car. Others were pushing past brushing against it. The guy's cigarette was the point I though it had gone too far. I didn't confront the guy as I don't consider it wise to get people's backs up when they've been drinking and are stood next to something of yours that's fairly valuable/fragile. Leaving seemed the best option. As I got in the car I checked the wing and sure enough there are a series of scratches and marks. As I'm sure everyone here does, I know my own cars incredible well, I could walk you round the 458 and point out every imperfection, the panels that don't line up brilliantly, the tiny ding on the rear deck, all the things you'd never notice looking at it in a carpark. It was at the Goodwood Breakfast Club on the Sunday and as soon as I got it back home I thoroughly inspected it as I prepared it for the Pub Club.

It was neither my intention nor my decision for the meets to be postponed, I was so pissed of at the complete lack of care and respect shown by some for other people's property that I decided to post about it on the thread. I would feel as disgusted whoever's car it was, I've a 306 Rallyé that I'd be just as annoyed if the same thing happened to it.

bring back the PH Pub Club window stickers, no sticker displayed = no entry to pub club.

These will only be given out on application and at the Pub Club organisers discression.....

Sorry to hear about the issues regarding the paintwork and not wanting to be an asshole, but as a smoker i cant see how accidentally brushing a cigarette along a panel could cause damage to the extent of a visit to the bodyshop. Dont get me wrong, im not trying to trivialise or argue the fact there is damage but how can this happen on what i assume is a well painted, and no doubt polished/waxed, car? I am genuinely intrigued, any photo's??

You Darren, have taken the words right out of my mouth!?

See my previous post. There's not a wax or polish I know of that'll stop buckles/studs on jeans/jewellery marking the clear coat. I'm not taking the car to a bodyshop.

Sorry to hear about the issues with your car, but I still can't quite picture it so I guess it's one of those you had to be there moments.

I have made the decision to calm down these meets by means of moving venue and will open a list each month that will be vetted in some way, I will not be putting details on social media for all to see, until after the meet for pictures and friendly banter to be shared, I feel going back to the good old list here will hopefully not be seen or shared by the likes of the people that have no interest in behaving and thinking about their actions.
Until I secure a new venue that I have in mind then further meets are postponed, I do take this very seriously and listen to all comments good or bad, Sam I really do hope this incident does not stop you from enjoying future meetings and hopefully see you soon.

Regards
Gary
You could use the Tunnel Runners model (or at least it used to be) of making meets invitation only with all meeting details and attendees distributed and confirmed offline?

I love gatherings of cars but sod taking my own. The trouble with gatherings of car "enthusiasts" is all the car enthusiasts.

That's a bit too much of a faff to go to a gathering don't you think? A simple registration would be a lot better.. What about those who want to attend but don't want to put their car on display (such as myself) and leave it outside, how would I go about getting an invitation if they are offline?

The way it works is that if you know the right people, you get invited. If you don't know the right people, you're probably one of the people they dont want to attend. Rightly or wrongly, it kept that group going for quite a while, with few issues AFAIK. Just a suggestion.

ETA: though it appears to be completely public now, albeit with pleas to keep clowns away. https://www.facebook.com/londontunnelrunners/

So because I dont know 'the right people' it means I can't attend and automatically means I am not welcome to attend? It's a car meet, not an illegal street race meet confused
I think its a little OTT for a small gathering of cars..

I have to disagree with the posts about you can only come if you "know the right people" or "Pub club stickers only".

Just for the simple fact that there are plenty of people including myself that come along to these meets, that don't necessarily know many/any people attending, but go to enjoy the cars on display and for a good evening out.
That shouldn't mean we are stopped from coming to these meets, through the actions of one individual.

OK not being funny i am really annoyed and angered for you as a fellow car enthusiast about what has occurred to your car its just not on and when i was a smoker i would never of dreamt of doing something so cruel to another mans hard earned and beautiful car. .

But as being one of the people vaping by the back of your car whilst speaking to fellow enthusiasts i cannot see how there is an issue with vaping near a car which bare in mind vape is vapour as in moisture that evaporates your car was closed up and we where stood a fair few feet from your car. i was not exhaling at your car the vape will travel where ever the wind is blowing.

you have a lot of support here from other members but i think you need to calm down a bit.

Sorry, but im not getting this, quotes from initial post above, wheres the problem? Not intentional, virtually leaning against, 6 inches away......................................

i was in a situation last night where a car virtually hit me, it was 6 inches away, though i dont believe it was intentional.......................nothing happened!!

Sorry Knack, but we all have what we believe to be nice cars and we come to these meets to show share them with others and to talk about our experiences with them. you must have been absolutely stting yourself at Goodwood, probably 1000 x the amount of people as at the pub club. Is a car really worth that amount of stress? I dont believe it is.

My suggestion would be to bring something less precious to the meets, should you wish to attend, relax and enjoy the events for what they are, a collection of inanimate objects, meeting likeminded petrol heads and chilling out.

i shall go and put my flack jacket on now, but seeing as Gary has decided to cancel further events of this nature is extremely disappointing over a virtual and non deliberate incident.

attended pub club for a fair few years , due to work not been able to make the last few and sad to see what i am reading , pub club used to be for ph members only , obviously if you are in a public place the public are going to turn up / be there anyway , but i have noticed this event has been mentioned on more and more car club fourms and lets just say some of these are the chav/corsa/saxo type car club ones , so i say have it like sunday service sign up and then email invite only set up.

I used to smoke and wouldn't have dreamed of doing it even near to someone's car, let alone stood 6 inches from it. Having friends that smoke, I know I've ended up with marks/burns on my jeans when stood next to them when they're smoking. It's the lack of care and consideration that I initially posted about. Postponing the meets wasn't my idea, perhaps any malice about that decision should be directed towards the person that made it. I've decided I won't be attending any more meets as stated in my original post. It's a shame that some people feel that if you've a valuable car you either shouldn't bother bringing it or that a level of damage is entirely acceptable/to be expected.

Hi Knack,

please re-read the post, and indeed your original post for clarification.

i have not said that you shouldnt bother bringing your car or that damage to vehicles is acceptable. You have said yourself that it was unintentional or at least you hoped it was. Should you find out it was a deliberate act of vandalism then i would be at the front of the queue rubbing hot brake pads over the face of the perpetrator!!

we love seeing cars like yours at these event as we do tricked out Saxo's and the like, everyones P&J's, but i feel there is more risk of damage in everyday scenario's, stone chips, car park dings etc. Hell, my wifes XKR is a lovely looking thing but the front end is peppered to Fook, thats the waty it goes if you want to drive them as intended.

Anyway, love the discussions, sorry about your car and hope you can get to drive it and show it at future events,

Darren

So sorry to read about the damage to Thekn4ck's car.

As a fellow owner of a red Italian motor, I fully understand his concerns about people just getting too close. I must say that I don't wait around my car much at events and just park up and enjoy looking around and just HOPE that nothing too bad happens. I can live with the inevitable sticky finger marks but just wish that folk didn't touch.
I worry more about bag buckles and metal watch straps, rings, etc, etc and have just decided that an occasional scuff is sadly inevitable but that I still wish to enjoy these events. Even a marshaller at Brooklands in January leaned over to direct me and his camera shoulder bag hit the door with some force - luckily not with the metal buckles. There is always a risk of wholly unintentional damage.

If I ever thought damage was being caused with malice, that would be a very different matter.

So Gary, please continue these events in some form, keep them off Facebook and everyone, try to give the cars just a bit more space.

First one I've been to and brought my Lad with me.
Stayed for an hour and had a burger and a great evening.

For me smokers don't have any respect for their bodies and therefore respect for others property is quite often lacking. What do they think happens to the butts they discard out of their windows?
Vaping is a cop out - but basically the same thing. The vapour isn't just harmless water. It's basically a glycerine solution and can leave an oily residue.

The car park where the Ferrari was parked was a bit cramped - perhaps spacing the cars out a bit more would have helped.

I left well before the cars all left but looked at the video. Some of the driving as cars were leaving left a lot to be desired - X6 for example.

I look forward to the next one - wherever it may be.

(On a lighter note I parked my nasty diesel Volvo in the lay-by as I didn't want anyone's P&J to catch anything nasty from it!)
