Parking in Brighton

After a few recent, and very expensive, trips to Brighton, are there any cheaper places in town to park than the usual NPC/EuroParks car parks? The marina car park seems to be free (or at least, nobody checks), but it's a good walk from the middle of town. Am usually there on a weekend, not that it seems to make much difference to prices or the number of parking wardens out and about, but you would have thought it would have been cheaper.

Ok, well if we assume that I am mad enough to visit, and "not going" simply isn't an option, then what cheap/free car parking is available?
