Another option for you to consider is around Northallerton. There's a direct train to Leeds and some lovely countryside round about.
We looked at that before kids; there are some lovely properties around - we even looked at a converted windmill for c.300k but the door to door was becoming 1hr 15 each way.velocemitch said:

Easy drive to Harrogate and/or Leeds but also direct train links to both. Your budget should get a house in Poppleton (has its own station on the Harrogate line and is a lovely village but still only 10 mins on the train/car into York centre) or somewhere around the race course which is a short'ish walk into the station.
We moved away when we were younger but came back 2 years ago and the quality of schools for the kids vs what was on offer around Halifax etc was a strong driver for that. Not regretted the decision at all. The issue with "rural" becomes the commute although there are nice villages this side of York with dead easy access to the A64. For commuting into Leeds, my dad used to drive A64/M1 to Garforth (big car park there and just off the M1) and then hop on a cheap 10/15 minute train into the centre.

We spent 3 years living in Long Preston, and I commuted to Keighley via the Skipton bypass.
There was a train to Keighley but the first one got on too late to get to work on time.
What I would ask the OP is where do you live now.
We had moved from the West Midlands and living in a village on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales seemed like a great thing, but eventually on a wet November afternoon, you will long to live in a city, where you can see something other than sheep, and don't have to drive for 20 mins each way to get a takeaway.

By contrast, I lived on Brick Lane in London for 12 years before moving up to the Dales. Granted I was brought up in the Dales, the Peak District and the Lake District, so rural living wasn't alien to me. But I haven't once missed being in the centre of town. If I want takeaway, it is a very good excuse for a decidedly un-leisurely drive over some fantastic roads to Skipton and back (the challenge of getting back with the food still hot adds to the fun). There was a train to Keighley but the first one got on too late to get to work on time.

But then I'm up in the Dales, not Long Preston. I actually looked at a house in LP the other day, but being in a settlement on such a main road really turned me off the whole idea. I'd much rather look at sheep

Bit of a curve ball but I would go south. Anything with a DN or WF postcode will be miles cheaper. I used to do a lot of work around Harrogate and the top side of Leeds and its a nice area but way too much traffic. The more rural spots to the North of Leeds still have horrific traffic. We are just outside Wakefield and I can be in London in 2 hours 15 door to door on the train or just over 4 to Edinburgh. We are suburban here and we have looked at going a bit more rural but we would be out in the DN postcodes where your 550k budget will actually buy something pretty decent. A Compromise could be the linking areas from the south of where we are which would be Selby/Sherburn/Tadcaster We keep looking over that way but the battle is always getting something as good value as we got in the WF area. All the posh postcodes like your LS17/29 etc 550k won't get much! Where we are now you could manage even without a car the transport links are great.
This seems like a nice place in Selbyhttps://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/125585453
Though I would need to check flooding risk

Money goes a LOT further around Selby than York/Harrogate/Ilkley/ Otley etc. I know Selby reasonably well as my grandparents lived there but I don't think those types of villages on the A19 are particularly nice - just a constant stream of lorries rumbling through etc.Selby and Ricall are popular places to make your money go further than York, and reasonably well connected by bus to York and onward.
York itself is very nice (yup, another biased person here) and has very good rail links. I’m about 10 minutes gentle walk from the station (and commute to Derby 2 days a week).
My favourite thing is the ability to be in the middle of town in 10 minutes, or the middle of the countryside in 20 (and having grown up in a village where busses didn’t exist and the nearest pub was two miles across the fields, I confess that might shape my view a little….)

Yes check the flood maps very carefully, though the Ouse is worse than the Aire, the house posted (Very nice.... but no garage!) is close to the Aire.
We seriously looked at the area around Selby, but couldn’t sell ours at the time, so plans changed. When we came to move again last year, it was still an option, but we preferred further north.
Bear in mind Selby has never recovered from the, closure of the Coalfield, a lot of miners moved in, with it being the great White hope for the coal industry, but it died and with it, to a certain extent the area. I work in Sherburn in Elmet so know it reasonably well.
You don’t want to be down wind of Drax if you can help it, so watch for that. The other two big power stations have gone now ( virtually)

The A19 south of Chapel Haddlesey was washed away in floods a couple of years ago (flood plain was inundated and then high winds formed waves that eroded the foundations away).https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/125585453

Fortunately the flood plains and defences seem to do their job, I can’t recall Chapel Haddlesey flooding recently. I think I would be more concerned about the A19 and to a lesser extent ECML noise. Burn airfield to the north has a gliding club so you might get noise from the tug aircraft.
Eggborough Cloud Machine is just about gone now, I think the last part of it was demolished last month. Looks like the site is going to be industrial units so more noise/pollution/traffic on the A19. I would check carefully before moving to see what’s planned.
