When it comes to a road for purely driving I've still to come across anything better than the A93 > A939 (Bridge of Cally to Grantown-on-Spey) and the B863 (loop around Kinlochleven). Great mix and it's all wide enough with generally good sight lines for a proper caning.
Neither are on the NC500 but you can relatively easily fit both in on the way there/back.

We''re doing the NC500 again but struggling with accommodation for 12 under one roof, has anyone ever stopped over in a hostel,we're not fussy just want a bed for the night
Next question where are the best military roads located and what was your experience
Thanks you
www.dundonnellhotel.com we stayed there with the quattro owner club, more than enough room for 12

Have stayed there too. Lots of parking, good food, keen on live music. Rooms a bit tired though and if your're particular may be worth checking if they still suffer from 'tinted' water.
Real Scottish water, the stuff the they make whisky with it's a few years since I was there last. The staff were always very helpful.Edited by Rick101 on Tuesday 17th January 21:47
afternoon all,
Just after some advice for our upcoming trip in August. Already had lots of great advice on here so really is appreciated.
As mentioned previously we only have 2 full days for the NC500, and at the moment the plan is to depart Inverness on Saturday morning (early-ish), heading clockwise so applecross etc and then our day 1 mileage is currently looking like a pretty big day doing around 315miles to a place called Tongue (20miles past Durness)
I've been trying to see if anyone has done it in 2 days. I aware that people have done it in 1, but not planning an endurance race Im aware that we're signed up for some long driving days, but usually is the case for us as even when we head into Germany its usually a 600mile day one journey from the Midlands.
I read somewhere that the highland mile can be 3 normal miles in terms of time taken, if that's the case then I may have overcooked our first nights stay.
Would be keen to see if anyone else has done a similar in terms of mileage in a day...for reassurance, or if not I may consider cancelling my reservation for something a little closer. Many thanks

A general NC500 question: how come all these spectacular roads, attracting enthusiastic motorists in a range of exciting cars, are not completely infested with speed traps?
More enforcement is coming. However, if it were average cameras then some of the roads are very enjoyable trying to average 60mph Rick101 said:
Possible but you will be tired. We did Lybster to Dunnell with two drivers and were both pretty exhausted by the end.
Thanks Rick, We will have 2 drivers per car so should be ok from that perspective. Edited by Rick101 on Monday 30th January 14:45
Its August time so should get some decent hours of daylight.

I second these. Went up through Keilder, the Cairngorms and across to Skye in '15 with the Saab and these were some of the best of the trip. You really get the impression of driving into the mountains on the A93.Edited by Patrick Bateman on Thursday 12th January 23:05
The far end of the B863 loop - had it all to ourselves.
