A9 average speed cameras
Discussion
[quote=martin_b]Guys,
I have to drive to Inverness next week, I can basically arrive anytime between 6:00 am and Mid-day, What time would you recommend I hit the A9 @ Falkirk to minimize my travel time? I had thought about 3:00am but is the road full of overnight freight then?
TIA
Martin
Left Polmont on Monday morning about 11.00am, arrived Inverness before 3pm. No major hold ups. There was one marked police car by Aviemore sitting wtching the world go by at 55mph.

Leave whenever suits best for arriving. The average speed cameras and higher HGV limit have normalised journey times quite a bit. Less slow journeys, but no chance to make good time by having your overtaking head on or travelling at night.
Google maps times are pretty accurate, 15 mins contingency time should be fine if you have strict deadline for arrival.

Has anyone here driven up the A9 recently? Apparently there are substantial roadworks with 11 mile tail backs etc, some people even saying Glasgow to Inverness is taking as long as 6 hours
Is this true? I am meant to be making the trip this weekend, any way round or is it all over exaggerated?

I was held up for an hour coming back from Inverness last weekend - roadworks are near Drumochter. Is this true? I am meant to be making the trip this weekend, any way round or is it all over exaggerated?
I gave up and turned off via Loch Tay and enjoyed some lovely scenery and no speed cameras but it's a wee bit of a detour!
Large section of roadworks south of Aviemore. It's the start of the dualling. Several miles of a 40mph limit with no overtaking allowed.
There are also works at the north end of the dual carriageway south of Drumochter. And several other sections with works.
I went up to Aviemore this morning and it was reasonably busy, but not too bad. I turned off at Kingussie and took the 'old road' to Aviemore from there to miss any delays north as it was getting quite busy with several artics ahead. The old road was quicker.
Coming back this evening I left Aviemore about 5.30 and when I joined the A9 there was no traffic ahead of me. I set the cruise control to, 60 then 40, then back to 60 and never saw another car ahead till after the Dalwhinnie south junction, 25+ miles! I caught the car at the start of the dual carriageway at Drumochter.
It was a bit busier after that, but the traffic was reasonably well spaced and happy to plod along around 50, so I managed to overtake plenty of times and made good progress.
All the roadworks were 'off' for the night when I was heading south, so no delays from them.

The 40 limit foes through one whole and one half ASC section too I think, and the signs indicated the 40 mph limit is ASC monitored, although possibly only in the full section? The full section also incorporates (and starts at) an overtaking lane that isn't closed off, so it would be quite easy to go for a wee overtake and bust your 40 average wide apart.
I've only had one trip up and down since the roadworks started, with no delay aside from being stuck to 40, but I think I'll be taking the old road from now on.

Yes just one full section of ASC's. Overtaking section is 40 as well and is a 60 normally.I've only had one trip up and down since the roadworks started, with no delay aside from being stuck to 40, but I think I'll be taking the old road from now on.
Don't tell everyone about the old road!
Is it just me, or has the overtaking section going south just before Ralia been shortened at some point? I'm sure the merge back to two lanes used to be further down the road (i.e. the hatched area was smaller), or is my memory playing tricks on me? Couple of times I've been coming down that road and found bit of road I had planned do my merge in was much shorter than I thought!

No I don't think it has changed, or if it has it's not changed by much as far as I can recall. here: https://goo.gl/maps/MyNTHq1Hikn
