A9 average speed cameras
Discussion
So I am thinking taking into account some comments, here we have a nasty road, wihich (as far as I know), has only a few places where you can nip past the slower traffic, and it has a fairly high number of incidents.
So now they install average speed cameras, which doesnt affect the speed limit on the road, that stays the same, except trucks can now do 50 instead of 40.
Now some of us are after gizmos to show their average speed between cameras.
Which I interpret to allow them to continue zipping past traffic, as was the case before these cameras were installed, and make sure overall they stay within a maximum average of 60 mph.
So in effect, how will this improve the safety record on this road?

Seems I accidentally caused a discussion, I was referring to the dual carriageway section just to be clear.

I see this all the time SATNAV GPS is accurate and shows just how far out some speedometers must be and stubborn some drivers can be when cruising in "fast" Overtaking lane and will not move back to left to empty inside lanes
Exactly, they won't move and when they finally do, you get glowered at for speeding! Does wonders for your fuel consumption having to accelerate back up to 70.....They've been advertising the limit on the radio for the last few weeks and I must confess, I hadn't realised that the overtaking sections carry a 60 limit as well.
I had assumed (obviously incorrectly) that being as how they were dual-lanes then those sections would have a 70 limit. So I predict a lot of people getting caught out by that.
For reference:
Single Carriageway - 60mph
Overtaking sections - 60mph
Dual Carriageway - 70mph
And if memory serves, there's a stretch of 50mph dual carriageway outside Ballinluig??
Does that sound right?

Yup. Dual carriageway sections are only 70mph if there is a central reservation/divider (although there may be exceptions).I had assumed (obviously incorrectly) that being as how they were dual-lanes then those sections would have a 70 limit. So I predict a lot of people getting caught out by that.

The "overtaking sections" are not officially DC as the carriageway is not separated by a physical barrier AIUI - I always wondered what the limit is where you have single carriageway that is separated by a barrier as you do for short sections at times. Never long enough to worry about though.I had assumed (obviously incorrectly) that being as how they were dual-lanes then those sections would have a 70 limit. No 50mph section at Ballinluig anymore IIRC - I think it used to be before they redeveloped the junction to separate the "grades" if that is the correct terminology.

Of course the A9 is all 60, isnt it? But was your reference to a single lane dual carrigeway a general question on dual carriageways?

A carriageway seperated by a barrier is a dual carriageway and NSL (70) applies? Unless a lower limit is shown. No 50mph section at Ballinluig anymore IIRC - I think it used to be before they redeveloped the junction to separate the "grades" if that is the correct terminology.

Dual carriageway = separation of carriageways. Any number of lanes (including 1) in either direction. 70 limit.
Single carriageway = lanes going in different directions on same carriageway. Any number of lanes. 60 limit.

Getting concerned now have to go up to Pitlochry on Sunday :-)
I've just done it. Many vans and caravans who I believe are still limited to 50mph were at the heads of queues. It was a bit too busy to overtake on single carriageway sections, so I had to take advantage of the dual carriageways to accelerate progress.Cat said:

Nope, the section between the Keir roundabout and Perth (all dual carriageway) is a 70mph limit for cars. From Perth to Inverness the single carriageway sections are 60mph and the dual carriageway sections are 70mph for cars.

I drove the Inverness to Perth stretch today. It didn't seem much different to usual. Maybe a bit more bunching and a few longer queues but I thought the higher lorry limit kept things moving better, if anything. I note there are a couple of sectors which have short stretches of single lane dual carriageway (e.g. by the Perth Visitor Centre and by Pitlochry) on which I believe the limit for cars is 70mph. I don't know how they figure this into their calculations. I also passed through one sector at an indicated 67 with a brief burst of speed to complete an overtake: I wonder whether anything will come in the post. Finally, they're still using camera vans on the dual carriageway just south of Inverness; hopefully I spotted that one in time.

My wife drive up the A9 today. I warned her about the average speed cameras. Her dad warned her. Our 12 year old son warned her as he'd heard it on the radio.
She just told me she was very careful to sit at 70mph, all the way....
If on the speedo, she'll most likely be fine at that in the 60 limits. She just told me she was very careful to sit at 70mph, all the way....

How on earth did she achieve that? Was she driving at 3am? Just headed south around 5pm Fri from Inverness to Stirling and North around 4pm Sun. Average speed in the mid-40s, just one queue of traffic behind something or other after another. She just told me she was very careful to sit at 70mph, all the way....
