On a Noggie boat now called the Normand Cutter and away to do a trans- atlantic sail to the Gulf of Mexico from Norway to do an Umbilical lay.. So it will just sitting back an enjoying the cruise for the next 3 weeks. Happy days...

Anybody been offshore Baku before ?
Im heading out to the East Azeri platform there this weekend?
Any recommendations for onshore entertainment there?
Not that I would be drinking in excess, the night prior to a check in
Did you get there OK then BBO, I would be interested to hear your impression of Baku, and if you found any interesting drinking places, I tend to stick with the tried and tested ones so maybe you found one I have not tried yet.Im heading out to the East Azeri platform there this weekend?

BP are most active in Azerbaijan, but there are also many servoice companies with bases here, as a prod tech BP/AIOC would be your best bet.
Baku is OK, not the worst place in the industry, but far from the best, they money is pretty good though and it is not too dangerous, there are pubs and restaurants, parks and beaches, though I wouldn't swim in the Caspian.
I am just home and will be going back around 9th July, I can look on the BP intranet to see if they are looking for people then if you want.

I haven't been offshore Gabon but if it is your first time on a rig the best advice I can give you is listen during your induction, make sure you know all the important locations- coffee shack, galley, rec room etc.
One serious piece of advice, always look up before exiting the accomodation and before entering the drill floor, that is usually where the dangers are.

Anybody worked offshore in Gabon? Looks like i will be heading out there next week at somepoint, I have never been on a rig in my life so I am a bit nervous about the whole thing!!
Col,worked in Gabon a couple of years back, for west africa it isnt too bad, i work on the GSF high island 7. food was ok, crew were pretty good. in town was ok too, some nice places to eat. i stayed in the ranch, a well known place, if you stay there you'll never be short of a drinking buddy.
going out at night was ok, just use common sense, dont take any more cash than you need to and try and stay in a group.
otherwise, have fun.
Hi all, haven't been offshore fo a couple of years now but still travelling (and reading Pistonheads) currently working in La Coruna in NW Spain doing Gas Turbine maintenance on a new G.E. installation.
Hopefully getting back to ABZ for a carry on in the not too distant future........

Ahhh you will be fine. Just remember there is no such thing as a V-door key and Martin Decker ain't a person.
cheers for the heads up.i used to work in casinos and when we got trainees in we used to send them looking for various stupid things.
1.new bubble for a the spirit level(one trainee actually got sent round 3 casinos in glasgow in a taxi asking for this)
2.chip glue to fix broken chips
3.spinning fluid if the dealer was struggling to spin the ball on roulette
4.we once actually put black permanent ink on a trainees finger to "give her more grip" when spinning the ball
trust me....its all funny at 4am
