Arnold gets another one
Discussion
The Arnold shark Ford dealership in locharbriggs Dumfries has been emptied as it seemingly was not making money.
No cars on site, all showrooms empty ,no tables etc etc , Do not know what happened to all the staff , I doubt they have been relocated locally , It seems like they have abandoned the site and they couldn't care .

A sign of things to come with some Foird sites possibly? No cars on site, all showrooms empty ,no tables etc etc , Do not know what happened to all the staff , I doubt they have been relocated locally , It seems like they have abandoned the site and they couldn't care .
If, over the years, all these dealerships didn’t spend time acquiring other garages and franchises, then losing them, then merging, then building shiny new showrooms, then letting some decline, etc etc do you get the feeling they would have made just as much money if they had done nothing? It seems very circular and all in all a bit of a waste of time.

“A senior industry source has told Car Dealer the Blue Oval has drawn up plans to rationalise its representation north of the border and is calling time on some franchisees. One of them is thought to be the UK’s most profitable dealer group, Arnold Clark, which is believed to have been handed a two-year notice.”

That and during the last couple of years Ford has been one of the worst hit when it comes to new stock availability. No point remaining open if you have nothing to sell.

Seeing this thread has morphed into a general chat about the various Scottish dealer networks, I was surprised to see that Motorpoint are moving into the old Laidlaw/Evans Halshaw Ford premises on Harry Lauder Road in Edinburgh.
It's been empty for at least 3 or 4 years and I just assumed it would be demolished and houses built on it like the adjacent development that used to be Baileyfield Industrial Estate.
EDIT: Just realised there was a passing reference to this on the previous page but Motorpoint wasn't mentioned. Did buy one car from them previously in Glasgow, a very keenly priced 10 month old Yaris, ex daily rental of course.

I assume its been emptyvfor so long as its probably been near impossible to get to the site with all the construction traffic as the industrial site got built on. You cant access it direct from Sir Harry Lauder road. You had to either go all the way round the industrial estate or in from Portobello.
It always had something interesting on display as car of the week.
Indeed, I'd always have a quick glance as I drove past. I certainly remember a Capri Brooklands 280 taking pride of place.
I remember test driving an original Puma there when they first came out. Didn't buy it as there just wasn't enough room behind the wheel (which didn't adjust at all if I remember correctly). Also tested a Tigra along the road the same day!

Big fan of the Motorpoint model versus the other car supermarkets. Went over to look at a few cars and they just handed me the keys and said to drop the keys back in when I was done and let them know if I wanted to buy any. I heard a rumour yesterday that AC are either giving up or losing the Mercedes Benz franchise.
Any more on this? Its a real pain needing to travel to Edinburgh from Aberdeen to get the obligatory dealer stamp - would be nice if someone less awful picked up the MB Aberdeen dealership.
I see AC are to drop the Harry Fairbairn brand and the BMW and MINI dealerships will just be plain Arnold Clark.
