HT Leads....what flavour?
Discussion
I keep re-using the same king lead, which I just test every so often (make sure the resistance is OK around 3k ohms).
I was thinking of buying some ignition wire and making my own one, you can still buy it loose by the metre (e.g. for motorbikes)
This weekend I intend on tidying up the routing of my leads which were stuck back on a bit higgledy piggledy after doing my heads.

I read somewhere recently that its important to keep 5 & 7 leads well separated to avoid crossfiring.Edited by adam quantrill on Friday 29th July 21:01
Hi mate
I have heard that it is 5&7 albeit never experienced it..
As for leads I always buy a good mid range set for say £30 and do this each year, I noticed on one occasion that after 10 months the silicone which seals the boot to the cable fails due to the excessive heat build up under the Wedge bonnet....
Why spend £100+ on leads that in a few years may need changing again when you could buy a mid range set and know each year you have a good spark?

Well £30 a year for 3 years is £90. Plus the time getting and fitting them - businessmen should understand that time is not a 'free' resource Mr Z - three times.
1 set of leads at £100 that last 3 years - CoG is a very good demonstration that the leads can last - is sourced and fitted once. £10 extra money paid out but only 33% of labour. What could you earn in the 'saved' 66%???????

Thats all well and good but dont moan when yours fail after two years and you are forced to order new ones and rather pay someone £20 to fit them you will have to book a days holiday...Well you have to try them out once fitted...1 set of leads at £100 that last 3 years - CoG is a very good demonstration that the leads can last - is sourced and fitted once. £10 extra money paid out but only 33% of labour. I don't get this £20 to fit them? It takes 3 minutes max and if a Wedge owner is incapable of swapping out a set of HT leads - what's the world coming to........
I was thinking as part of a service Keith...If people cant change a set of plug leads then they shouldn't own a classic car...let alone a TVR...mrzigazaga said:

CoG has tested his set for much longer than 2-years, under greater strain, in worse conditions than the Wedge arrangement over many more miles.I think reliability is more than proven.
The point I was making is that a persons time has a value great than 0.
Also, paying £20 to fit £30 leads each year means that over 3 years its costing £150. So even if they do fail after 2 years they are cost neutral.

I have Magnecraps on mine - they have split. I'm going for Mallory next time round....
I'll second that emotion!I know LPG puts extra load on HT leads and I'm running MSD performance EDIS type coil pacts on wasted spark... but there's no excuses for this, especially as the people at Magnecor market their leads as being the best there is for gas.
This is total BULSHP!!!!... and here's the proof!
This was the second expensive Magnecor lead to blow up on me in just a few thousand miles of use, and as you can see from the images I use heat socks to protect the leads from the Chimaera forward running manifolds. While the scorching is obvious to see the failures weren't actually manifold heat related, the leads initially opened up because they are poor quality and after that the subsequent shorts that followed tore them open even further.
Also be warned, Magnecor do not stand by their warranty, make no mistake its not worth the paper its written on!
I moved on to MSD Super Conductors which I made up myself from a universal set purchased from Summit racing, these leads are the best you can buy and are used by pretty much every experienced Yank building big horsepower hot rods and drag racers.
However, they are expensive, I need them because I run a very powerful ignition system compared with the standard canister coil and distributor arrangement, I also burn LPG which because it's harder to strike that petrol also puts a huge strain on all my ignition components. For those like Solitude who have a standard ignition system and burn petrol, I recommend just buying a set of quality Bosch leads for a V8 distributor equiped Range Rover.
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ignition-Lead-098635681...
These are top quality Bosch leads for only £25 a set, making them everyone's go to choice for their RV8 TVR!
