What Does Your 3.9 / 4.0 litre Wedge Make?
Discussion
Ok Wedgies,
Question for you:
There is a bit of chatter over in the Chimp cage about a realistic output for a really well built 4.0 litre RV8.
http://www.pistonheads.com/xforums/topic.asp?h=0&a...
Without wishing to blow smoke up the Wedgies backsides I expect there are some serious 3.9/4.0 litre Wedge cars out there that are making better numbers than an average Chimp?
From what I have read I think an RV8 of this capacity has the potential to deliver 270hp at the crank, but it will need decent gas flowed heads and other induction mods to do so.
My feeling is TVR Power put a lot more effort into the early (pre-serp) engines.
When TVR started churning out hundreds of Chimps a month there simply wasn't the time or profit margin to flow the heads like they often did with the earlier cars.
So come on Wedgies what does your 3.9/4.0 litre Wedge really make on the rollers?
And what have you done to get it there?

Any advance on 238hp?
Come on Wedgies, my old Chimp has a few more ponies than that with the following basic mods:
There must be a few full house 400 SE's out there making over 260, surely?
Come on Wedgies, my old Chimp has a few more ponies than that with the following basic mods:
- Rob Robertson Stealth cam
- Dropped trumpets with SC Power bell mouths
- SC Power plenum spacer
- Full ACT induction kit with K&N
- Pre-cats removed
- Mark Adams Tornado chip
- Mark Adams rolling road fine tuning session
- Lightened flywheel
- Uprated Helix clutch
- A Wedge sticker with a line through it stuck on the door WW2 stylee
- TVR Power monkey nut dispenser
- ACT de-catted and flowed Y Piece
- A pair of Rob Robertson stage 4 heads
- 72mm plenum
- 45mm blended plenum base with larger trumpets to suit
- Ported & blended inlet manifold
- More Wedge stickers with lines through them for the door

Solitude's Ambulance White 350 is quite a spritely little beastie I'll have you know!
(even with it's break dancing rear end)
I hereby officially throw down the gauntlet by saying I am happy to take on any normally aspirated 4.0 litre Wedge you care to challenge me with.
There, that's it, I've said it now
A 260hp 4.0 litre Wedge may have the edge on outright power but my Crimson Starmist Chimp should even things up on the power to weight ratio.
I freely admit a Wedge 4.2, 4.5 or larger will be a challenge, & I will hand any rare SX jobs over to my mate JD to spank.
The big question is who has the most powerful normally aspirated 4.0 Wedge then?
So come on Wedgies fess up if you think you're hard enough

Well if the guantlet is being thrown down, my little 3.5L produces 270hp and 330flbs of torque, and thats before I hit the nitrous button.......still fancy your chances Chimpy?
Hi Dave, how you doing? Still golfing?

With immediate effect you are hereby officially banned from the 4.0 litre Chimp vs Wedge contest.
Your banned status has been created on the grounds that you have a hoofin great blower on your car.
Although you seemed like a nice bloke at BBWF it now appears you may be a cheating cheese eating laughing gas sniffin northerner
Yup still golfing Chedder me old pal, but only when my boyfriend lets me.
The salon is taking up a lot of our weekend time these days, we need every penny we can get for the civil partnership party.
Pink swans don't come cheap these days.
Are you still wandering about with that decibel meter?
Next BBWF I will have my ACT de-cat Y Piece on so the Chimp volume will be turned up to 11
NB: Not all northerners are excluded by the way or I will be ruling out 90% of the Wedgies.
What is it with northerners and Wedges anyway?
Are they Whippet friendly or something?
OK Wedgies, first off I have to say you have been (mostly) very honest & fair.
Cheddar has tried to sneak his heavy breathing supercharged monster in under the radar but I shot his whistling dairylea arsh out of the sky.
So far we have a 245bhp @ flywheel on Morrisons 95 RON fuel which to be fair is not too shabby from B@man.
But the engine is ex Chimp pre-serp, not sure how that makes you Wedgies feel?
It sure as hell makes me laugh like a drain
I am genuinely surprised actually, I'm sure there must me a 4.0 litre Wedge out there somewhere with over 245?
But so far it's not looking too good for the Wedgies
Come on boys is a Wedge with a hairdressers engine the best you got?

He sneaks in with a big hitter just as I was typing.300 LB/FT
and the one that matters 122.8 DB
But is this car a genuine 4.0 litre?
We need details & evidence.
If its a proven 4.0 litre the Wedgies may well be back in the game.
Nay on top of the game!
Unless that is it's another sneaky Chimp motor in a cheese car

Oh dear, Oh dear, Oh dear....300 LB/FT

Just looked at KelWedge's Profile and this is no 4.0 litre.
The car seems to be running a 4.6 litre.
Are we not looking at the title of the post Wedgies?
Disappointing chaps, very disappointing indeed.

So (cheaters aside) Jonny weggie is leading the way with his MegaSkirt special at 255.jonny.
That's a very healthy 4.0 litre RV8 you have there Jonny.
But what fuel is she drinking?
If she's on the rusty nails that's worth an extra 8hp and gives you a disqualification.
But I expect knowing my thrifty kilt wearing mates it's sipping red diesel and also giving 37.4 mpg.
Come on the Jocks!!!!!

My puny 4.0l wedge kicks out about 320bhp and around 300 torques.
How many times Wedgies, NO BLOW JOBS.This is a normally aspirated 4.0 litre post..... period.
Good figures though Adam, and he dances like John Travolta
Well John Travolta on acid... on an ice rink..... with a newly fitted artificial hip
Only kiddin Adam, it's just Chimp talk mate... loved your moves @ BBWF.

Just sold a 420 - J E eng build sheet stated 293bhp @ 6500 rpm
That 420 was defo faster than all my three chims including the 500HC.
Not willy waving, the new owner has all the documentation
Alan, honestly, I ask you????????????????That 420 was defo faster than all my three chims including the 500HC.
Not willy waving, the new owner has all the documentation
When did 4.2 litres become 4 ?
But lets face it thats a monster figure for an RV8.
If 4.2 = 293 that's 70hp per litre & would indicate 280hp is possible with a 4.0 litre.
Problem is it aint a 4.0 litre mate, its a 4.2!
Disqualified
PS: Willy waving is what this post is all about, so come on Wedgies get your thang out!
So far it's the Haggis munchers in the lead with a 255 incher

I have had it a couple of years and put it on the rollers as the indy who looks after it was very positive about how well it went. I thought that this was something he might say to take the sting out of some of the bills, but the bloke at the RR was complimentary about it as well.
Have added a smooth bore induction thing and sorted a small ht problem. Must take it back down to the rolling road

You are not a Wedge my friend.
Fear not my fellow Chimpster.
Chimps will be canvased in another post over in the cage.
Let the Wedgies show their cards first.
[quote=taz turbo]Off topic,
My 2.8 wedge has a miserly 262 at the flywheel, but has fantastic torque, with a great curve (well more of a line really).
Chris.

Wrong engine, wrong capacity, & a Turbo! (Bloody great figures though )
Whats next? A Cerbera 4.5 AJP with 440?
Once again, this post is for NA 4.0 litre Rover V8's only please, however Megasquirt & mapped sparks are permitted.
Are we all done at 255?
One last chance before I move the topic over to the cage to see what the best 4.0 litre Chimp is shuvin out.
Come on, Wedge pride is at stake here!

Late entry Wedgies are most welcome, so it's not over till the fat Chimp sings.
You have it all to play for.

And that was at 5250rpm.
After opening this up to Chimps & Grifters, Jonny weggie is still currently top of the global competition. And that was at 5250rpm.
Edited by Jonny weggie on Thursday 8th September 12:57
He then drops in with the graph just to drive it home & casually points out his number was at 5250rpm.
Very nice touch JW.
There are some Chimps that have come close, but currently it's no banana over in the cage.
Come on Wedgies show your man some support, JW is retaining the pride of Wedgedom for you all.
"My old 1275GT Mini made 320hp when I replaced the SU carbs with a twin choke Webber"
Myths and stories are no good Wedgies
The mythical 270hp 4.0 litre Rover V8 still eludes us (in all TVR camps).
A 255hp Wedge remains the best confirmed result so far.
However I know of a certain Chimp that's about to surprise us all.
Who can it be

My 400se had a rolling road dyne recorded in July 2007 at 270.4bhp at 5,600 rpm, with 291 fftlb torque at 3,650rpm. Don't think it,s on these figures now though. Can these have nitrous added easily?
Well they're all coming out of the woodwork now. It's an old figure but you seem to indicate you still have the car, & you have been honest about it too.
My feeling is you may have lost a few ponies over the years but as long as nothing major has worn out (cam, rings, valve seats) you could still win a fresh shootout.
I will let the other Wedgies decide if you should get the crown.
By the way I am doing my best to keep up with the mighty Wedgies, latest addition below:
Maybe only worth an extra 5hp, but should sound pure Pre-Cat Griff heaven
The Chimp goes Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Love it mate
Actually it's a twin port Flugal Horn
Might even be worth 10hp
