Just some quick questions, as I'm pretty sorted now for getting there etc but unlikely to be online from wednesday onwards:

Where do I go when I get there? I've never been to Puke, but assuming the tracks main entrance is easy anough to find with signs/maps etc, what then? do I give money to someone to get in as a non-driver, or just drive on in?

And is there anything else I should know? (as someone who hasn't been to a track-day before)

Hi Ben

I'll send you a PM with my mobile number.

As you head a couple of km south from Pukekohe township the track is on the left.

The first nice sealed driveway actually belongs to the horsey-people, is often closed, and even when open they occasionally run out to stop car-people coming in that way. The second driveway is easy to miss and gravel

Just go down the hill and the track crossing is off to the right of the grandstand, next to the brick scrutineering building. On private trackdays like this it's best to park on the infield grass behind the pits.

The driver & passenger indemnity forms are normally signed at the Jennian Homes building, next to the pit-lane exit, if it's open (or on the deck if it's closed).

Spectators are free, passengers may or may not need to pay a fee (normally only if the organizer is carrying some additional insurance) but definitely need to sign a form and are best to attend the briefing.

Make sure you have appropriate sleeves and trousers, and I'll bring my spare helmet.

If you're running around all day taking photos etc you can end up getting a LOT of sun. Sunscreen is a good idea but don't put it above your eye-line (use a hat) as when you've got the helmet on you'll sweat it into your eyes.

And finally make sure you've utilized the toilet facilities before getting a ride with Dean hehe

Blew the cobwebs out of the Westie today driving

Bit of a tight fit. The seat must have shrunk in the wash. There's no other possible explanation hehe

Damnation - client just called a meeting tomorrow, so I won't be able to come along.
What are they doing texting me on a Sunday when they should be watching motorsport on telly...

Me too. On Thursday a client rang wanting me in Hastings on Monday.

"I'm sorry I have a prior commitment. How's Wednesday?"

I'd prefer a few more corners and a lot fewer bumps. Like Taupo or Hampton Downs bounce

OUCH!!!!!

Farewell one Integra and one Levin. And a pretty hefty bill for a damaged Scooby.

Reckon I got off fairly lightly with a broken pressue gauge!! Ian W was lucky to get through the big/last accident unscathed. Me too I guess as I saw it from the hot seat and heard the crunch inside my lid.....

Carnage......... usual post 2.30pm heroes I'm affraid :-D

Anyone want to join the Petrolheads Sensible Track Day club for (older) people who like to drive fast but who loves their cars?

I saw that just as we left.... didn't realise it was quite that nasty, or close to hitting anyone else.

Bear in mind that ANYONE can crash on a trackday, and Jennian is a nasty corner that deserves a lot of respect... for what it's worth, it seemed like Matthew (integra) got caught up in someone else's accident.

Bear in mind that more than a couple of Elises had spins too during the day.

But yeah, on ANY circuit you have to be careful... the boon with Pukekohe is that the corners are fast and the walls are close.

When I've coached for driver training on the track we've always warned about the last run or the end of the day when drivers are tired, or over confident or thier mind is drifting off elsewhere. There is a term commonly used but I can't for the life of me remember it. Many spills happen during this time.

It was a two Act play with the chorus joining in for the epilogue.

Ian arrived on the scene in the intermission between the two Acts. What warned him of it was the huge cloud of dust which made him slow and then pick his way around the first car. Shortly thereafter the second car came through.

By the time Dean & I came through at 10 kph, the Levin driver was standing in the middle of the track yikes looking quite confused.

I didn't realize Matthew was actually in the accident.

I watched it all unfold. I was right behind the Levin going into the sweeper. I watched the rear end break away in slow motion and he gracefully drove the nose of his car into the barrier before spinning back onto the track in a cloud of dust and dirt. I was fortunately able to take avoiding action but the Honda behind just plowed straight into him. I had mounted my camera in Dean’s car so didn’t get the action shot. But I think Dean's commentary when he arrived on the scene makes up for it…

My first time at Puke, car wasn't 100% but had a great time anyway. Here's a lap trying vainly to keep up with Dean.

Dean's full commentary is currently uploading...

Great putting some faces to names as well. Many thanks to Graham for the go-go juice!

that was a fair time after the accident.... we saw the dust cloud while we were waiting for the gates to cross the track... about 10 seconds afterwards the safetry truck went out of the pitlane.... the truck had just arrived then... I remember seeing Dean+Graham crossing the line and saying "thank god it wasn't them".... we then made sure we did a headcound of Elises before we headed off.

Oh and I don't think it was a Levin... the car on the track facing the wrong way (that I'm assuming the Honda hit) was an SW20 MR2

Thought it was an MR2, but had to bow to the wisdom of our resident motorsport Journalist

Were there two MR2's?

The one that had the hose come off the blower earlier in the day made it back to the pits undamaged about 15 minutes after the crash. I think he was one of the two other cars that were off on the grass when I went through.

I was trying not to run over anything sharp while keeping all eyes on the mirrors for anyone coming up behind too quick.

Is there any reason (other than $) why there couldn't be lights at each of the flag stations that could be operated by the clerk-of-the-course to issue a full track yellow or red?

Yeah, they might scare the horses! rolleyes

There were 3 mr2s, the dark blue one (which kept blowing hoses, Daniel finally got some laps in later in the day), light grey one with front mounted intercooler and various bits of alloy on the boot, and a newer model one, also a dark colour?

Daniel's MR2 (the Blue one which kept blowing hoses) wasn't involved in the accident at all, he came back to the pits just after it happened. The Black SW20 MR2 was involved, the Grey AW11 MR2 wasn't involved, but stopped to helo sort it out after it happened.

4 mr2's and a levin

Grey AW11 w/ a 3SGTE 2L turbo
Blue AW11 Supercharger (Daniel)
Black SW20 NA who crashed (it was the poor guys first time out)
Red SW20 Turbo - me, spent the whole day completely heatsoaked and couldn't improve on my 1:19 best...

Grey Levin - Rob, friend of Matts who almost was involved in the crash.

I was following a yellow elise into Jennian when I saw the dust cloud - is that someone here? Fairly awful accident - important thing of course is that no-one was hurt.

Those Elises sure are impressive, I want one! Failing that, perhaps a type R integra, they seem to be a very good factory package for the circuit - Matt was in the 16's, and the car is completely stock!

cheers

Rhys.
