The "I love my ST220" thread...
Discussion
I don't know if anyone is looking at for an ST at the moment, but my old one has just surfaced on autotrader. I part ex'd it around two months ago, so I don't how it's got to private sale so quickly, however, the mileage is the same thereabouts from when I sold it. If anyone wants a cheap ST, that's been very well maintained over the last three years (full history before that too), I would recommend looking at this one. I've no idea who the seller is btw, it's just this is one of the few of my previous cars that I wouldn't hesitate recommending to a new buyer!

Just to show decent examples of these are still on the go.
Bought as a temporary run about between German cars but it’s really, really good.
It’s had a proper front to back service, front end suspension overhaul, Asbo brakes and a new set of Conti Sport Contact 4’s, it’s a right good blast!

What's the usual opinion of fixing rust on these? I've seen a facelift that has rust on both rear arches where they meet the rear bumper and a couple of eruptions along the top of the windscreen. How bad will it be underneath? It doesn't have an mot for mechanical reasons that I can sort out myself but if I could get it for a decent price.....
I’ve found one fairly local for just under £3,000.
130,000 miles. Service history (says backed by service history so unsure if that’s full service history).
I’m tempted. I’ve wanted one for a while but never been able to afford the fuel/insurance. Now the insurance is only £200 and fuel isn’t a huge issue these days.
Anything to look out for?

Yes, they have a few issues. Must have evidence of regular oil changes. The 3.0 is sturdy if well maintained, but many of them have died due to low oil levels/infrequent changes. Also being a MK3 Mondeo, rust around the bottom of the door, wheel arches, suspension mounts... later ones are no better and you'll be stung for £600 road tax on March 2006 onwards models. Also make sure the clutch feels good. A replacement is a four figure sum! 130,000 miles. Service history (says backed by service history so unsure if that’s full service history).

I briefly had one and I did like it, but got a bit nervous about potential bills, and it really just being a quick Mondeo that in my opinion didn't really justify the running costs. I would say it wasn't horrendous on fuel. Mine averaged around 30 MPG but every journey was at least 15 miles with little traffic.
I agree with the previous poster. Mondeo V6 clutch (dual mass) changes are £1k. Maybe £800 with a friendly local garage. Tax can be the killer though. Check the registration online before you jump in and buy it. It can be £585 a year. Obviously check the MOT history to see if any previous owners have let advisories go on for multiple years.
Thanks!
Tax is a bit st. It’s the £585 one sadly, however happy (ish!) to pay it as I don’t spend money on other things. Fuel wise isn’t a huge issue. Will be using a bike most the time and car for when it’s really st or when going out with my partner.
MOT history looks good. Couple of fails over the years which is to be expected and advisories appear to have all been sorted. Last one (July) had zero. One before had a couple of I remember rightly.
I’ll go and have a look at it. Not in a rush to buy one and happy to wait.
Also considering a Focus ST as well if one comes up in my price range that isn’t terrible.
