Help!!!

I've got a TVR Tuscan and I have just bought a second car as a commuter car (Peugeot 406).

Imagine my surprise when I phoned up for insurance to find out that:
1) I could not have two cars on one policy,
2) The second car must have a new policy, and all no-claims bonuses I have don't count on the second policy!!!!

As a result I have been getting ludicrous quotes - most of them MORE expensive than my Tuscan Insurance.
has anyone else out there had this problem and/or got a solution?

Correct (sadly)... I have 4 cars..all with individual policies... and my NCB is just on the Puma.

..several companies do offer dual car policies though, only problem being, if you have a prang you loose everything you've earned..

Cheers
Matt.

Not what you want to hear but...

Yes I've got the same problem

My solution, buy a classic car for everyday use. I know it sounds the wrong way round, but my 2.8i Capri cost just £150 a year fully comp and my last Range Rover (1973 chassis, 1992 body and running gear (not axels for legal reasons) therfore on an old "L" plate) £120 fully comp

Once you've got no claims on your 2 (3 in my case) policies you can begin to upgrade the motors

Shop around. I have the same problem, with 3 cars to insure. All mine are "specialized" cars and are therfore with 3 different insurers. That said, for me, it was the handling of the no claims bonus that is the key.

1. Some insurers will not take a no claims bonus from another car into account...period.
2. Some insurers will "transfer" the no claims bonus, thus leaving the original car bereft of bonus.
3. Some will give "full value" (my quotes) for a no claims bonus on another car, without affecting the original car's status.

It's 3. that you want. I've now got 7-years protected no claims on all three cars, having owned the Landy for 7 years, the Caterham for 3 years and the Cerb for 1 year. So it can be done.

Shop around and good luck.

When I bought a Cerbera in 1999 I also bought a BMW as a runabout. At first the insurance was very high for the BMW but I think I was allowed some no claims! These days I have a Chimaera and an Alfa 156 with max no claims on both. While you can argue you can only drive one car at a timeit seems you have to bite the bullet until you build up the no claims. By shopping around the insurance for both of them is less than for the Cerbera!

Managed to convince my current insurer to take three cars against one single NCB. They had to clear it with the risk manager, but then agreed with the risk due to the fact that I cant drive all three at the same time.....!!!

Still, likely that it will be an issue come next renewal - as I can get the TVR cheaper elsewhere so looking to address this. However, cant help thinking that a single policy for multiple cars would be the way forward - who exactly does this?

Cheers,

guys, there are companies out there that allow you to put ally your insurance onto one policy. I know someone at work who has 3 cars , house, and boat insurance all on the same policy.
He told me once that it probably wasn't worth doing unless you had 3 cars as I think his the cost was heading towards £2k for his policy.

I'll see if I can find the details for you.

On a peronal note, When I got the TVR, I was able to "Mirror" my NCD onto my new policy. Basically this is just an introductory discount I guess. Speak to Cheam Ins brokers for more details.

Nope.....assuming that you have some no claims bonus to start with (i.e. you can't magic it up if you never had one in the first place) it can be done.

The only limitation I had with any of them was that the bonus on each doesn't become "protected" until after its first renewal.

Thanks for responses so far.

I have full protected no-claims on my TVR, but I have made 2 claims in recent years, so I think this excludes me from being able to mirror no-claims onto another policy.

Alex200mph -
Any contact number/website for HLC ?? I tried www.hlc.co.uk ... and got The Highland Language Centre!!!!

So.....

I have full no claims on my chim and my Range Rover

Could I....

Crash the Chim probably through over-exuberance 25 times in a year, lose my NCD (obviously) transfer my insurance from the other car onto the TVR, then buy a Micra till I'd calmed down a bit ??

What d'you reckon ?

Same here. And it was Cheam too, although they weren't the only ones to offer this.

Likewise with me.

So basically, it can be done.

Oh, and the "all in one" policy is called "Portfolio".

The first time I owned two cars, I spoke to my insurers at the time and no problem - a second no claims bonus was okay with them due to my exemplary driving record (ahem!). When I moved on from them, they sent me 2 separate proofs of no claims - one for each car.

Now I have one car with standard insurance and one with a "mirrored" NCD (i.e. a separate policy with a second NCD on it). Both NCDs are protected individually.

I think the trick here is to shop around. Some insurers are kinder than others! I can give you details of my insurers if you want them.

I have both my 'raris insured for 5K miles each, with the same company, ClassicLine, on the same policy, whilst retaining my NCB on the daily car. They needed proof that I had a NCB. There are several Co.s out there that bundle insurance, certainly car insurance (since you may have X cars but you can only drive one at a time), and household insurance too. Will dig out the numbers this evening if it's helpful.

If both cars require renewal at the same time, then try the following:
Insure commuter car using the full (protected) NCB from the Tuscan. (All that's required is proof of NCB from existing Tuscan insurer).
Then insure the Tuscan through Sunninghill or Mannings who will mirror the full NCB on your banger (and should be as cheap as anywhere). After 1 year the Tuscan will again have a freely transportable full NCB. i.e. max NCB on both cars.

I've started a company dealing in cars (you don't actually have to do any dealing her so read between the lines) - get trade insurance which doesn't actually insure any particular car but covers you for ANY car up to a certain value. In my case this is £25k. I have a joint policy with a nother PH member and it costs us about £2,400pa. Not bad when you half it and consider what that lets you get away with. No security needed, no garage needed (well, not all the time) and you can jump in whatever you want.

Anyone with you is also insured thrid party (as in a test drive) so your missus can drive you back from the pub when you're battered.

There are downsides, ie: only 40% max NCB, can't protect it, massive excess etc etc but it allows you to drive exotic machinery cheaply and legalish....

Not wishing to overpost on this , but the secret is to get it done and hang on claim free for a year.

You then have totally separate policies (assuming they are with diferent companies), both of which have the high NCD allowed during the first year. If you then switch insurers, you can prove a long NCD on your newer car. Noone asks to see historic proof of the NCD building up.......sorted.

If you could dig some numbers out - that would be great. I've got nothing to loose by calling up a few places and seeing what they have to say.
