Don, If you like driving from Newbury to Basingstoke, can I suggest a diversion at Kingsclere? Can't remember the name of the road, I'm afraid, but Kingsclere to Whitchurch is fantastic. Smooth tarmac, with long straights punctuated by a few sweeping corners. Lots of gradient and it's all right next to Watership Down.

Just thought of another one, again off the A339 Newbury-Basingstoke: Headley to Tadley. Manic corners. Quite tight, though - my best drive along there was in my day car (106 GTI).

Foss Way in the various counties it passes through. Ex Roman road so straight, mostly. Some dips make you ground out so watch out. Edited by jmorgan on Saturday 26th May 23:58

Hey, thanks for that, cockers. I think I may even have been down that road....now's the time of year to do it again! This coming Sunday if the weather's fine I'll be doing the roads around that way all day...yes yes yes!

Thinking about it - this must be a good topic for a web site, with maps, pubs, cafes etc. Oh and Gatsos! R...
I've been toying with this idea for some time but can't work out the best format for setting it up. To do it properly would require maps which unless hosted on a private/anonymous site creates problems with copyright etc (witness the AA/Ordnance survey litigation!). Perhaps broken down by region with people giving points for number of Gatsos, traffic levels, state of road...? Suggestions on a postcard... or on here

My choices: A413 from Aylesbury to Buckingham (good route to Silverstone too) Various roads in Sussex near Fernhurst - whatever the road is from Haslemere out to the east & then Petworth, then Goodwood, Midhurst etc

Ted. Why not create a special web-form that requests all the salient details....the important thing is a consistent format...not any particular one..? I'd be happy to write up a couple of sample routes...want me to 'mail you something? Then when visiting an area you could search for a good route, find pubs, restaurants, places to see listed..along with GATSOs, road quality etc. May be a rating system is needed. e.g. 5 for scenery, 4 for road quality, 5 for being free of speed cameras, 4 for likelihood of queues etc. I think this would make a GREAT area for the site....

Ted, Regarding maps, can you stick links into (say) multimap? Or do they charge real money for people who just want to link to their site?

Yep.. sounds good. It's coming together in my head now Probably need a rating system/comment system so that people can disagree! If you could mail me your info/ideas I'll see what I can do... All fired up now. Do I have a bash at this or do loads of sodding paperwork...

Good point - they're happy to link to them as long as you don't embed the maps in your own pages. That could be the answer with the start/end of each route referenced. (I was thinking of marking out the roads which would require a copy of the map).

Found another one, but fairly short - the B5284 from Kendal to join the A592 running down the side of Lake Windermere - the B-road is a tight swooping 'big dipper' of a road - not fast but really requires concentration - lovely farm/lakeland scenery too.
