Anyone tried to insure two cars??? HELP NEEDED.

The first time I owned two cars, I spoke to my insurers at the time and no problem - a second no claims bonus was okay with them due to my exemplary driving record (ahem!). When I moved on from them, they sent me 2 separate proofs of no claims - one for each car.
Now I have one car with standard insurance and one with a "mirrored" NCD (i.e. a separate policy with a second NCD on it). Both NCDs are protected individually.
I think the trick here is to shop around. Some insurers are kinder than others! I can give you details of my insurers if you want them.
You lucky sod!!! Surely the insurance co made an error sending you two no claims bonuses? Either way well done. I think my sister got a similar result, where she told them she was on my parents policy for years and they had 6 years no claims. When she left they sent her a certificate for 7 years no claims.
I would liked to have aggregated all my cars on one policy too, but was actually very lucky to get insurance on one of them anyway.
Basically I moved all my no claims to my most expensive car. My Mazda now has a years no claims, but Supra doesn't. I remember a thread here with similar subject and some good companies were listed that would cover all cars and some decent rates were listed. Try searching for it.

If both cars require renewal at the same time, then try the following:
Insure commuter car using the full (protected) NCB from the Tuscan. (All that's required is proof of NCB from existing Tuscan insurer).
Then insure the Tuscan through Sunninghill or Mannings who will mirror the full NCB on your banger (and should be as cheap as anywhere). After 1 year the Tuscan will again have a freely transportable full NCB. i.e. max NCB on both cars.
Interesting you say this. My Tuscan is insured with one of the companies you mentioned (good price too), but when I asked about the second car they didn't suggest insuring them in the way you proposed. I simply got a quote for the 406, and due to my 3 recent claims (despite having protected no-claims, and one of the claims not being my fault) the quote was: £2300. The 406 only cost me £3500!!!

No - all agreed and above board. When I insured the second car, I asked specifically about the NCD situation, and I was told that as I was a good customer (i.e. I paid the bill on time!), they'd be happy to offer me an identical NCD on a separate policy. So I had two policies, two NCDs, and therefore two renewal notices with proof of NCD.
I hadn't realised before how lucky I was!! I'll be nicer to this company next time they phone to try to persuade me to go back to them...
I think your doing it backwards.
Use no claims on daily driver and insure TVR as a classic or future classic (Royal & Sun have a future classic policy).
I pay very little on the Swift Gti full NCB and ringing round can get the TVR Griff 500 for under £400 fully comp with no NCB as a classic agreed value of £15,000 restricted mileage.
I've done this for the last 3 years now. Insurance is due on Sunday.

Sgirl, can you forward me your Ins Co details please.
Also ..trade polices are great, but usually only pay out he "trade" value of a car. The reason for this is that the insurance co assumes you were buying at trade, to sell at retail.
Normal policies pay at retail. This can make a huge difference (thinking back to what main dealers offer for a car, and then try to sell it at!!!)

I have both my 'raris insured for 5K miles each, with the same company, ClassicLine, on the same policy, whilst retaining my NCB on the daily car. They needed proof that I had a NCB. There are several Co.s out there that bundle insurance, certainly car insurance (since you may have X cars but you can only drive one at a time), and household insurance too. Will dig out the numbers this evening if it's helpful.

If you could dig some numbers out - that would be great. I've got nothing to loose by calling up a few places and seeing what they have to say.
My cars under ClassicLine- Ian Fray Insurance Group.

I spoke to Mr Darren Coote and was impressed with him. They offer portfolio insurance, which I am considering myself.
Other numbers from 'Ferrari News', monthly newsletter of FOC:
Portfolio policy specialist:
Luker, Rowe & Co: 01494 733337
Classic/sports cars:
AON: 01483 706070
FCI 020 8532 9637
Heritage: 0121 246 6060
Footman James: 0121 561 4196
Nowell & Richards: 01785 255514
First Point: 01604 499799
Unfortunately, I have not yet found a viable alternative to ringing round as the spread has been quite staggering in the past.
One final insurance tip that was on the FOC website recently is Tesco online.
Good luck!

I have just 'discovered' this issue when trying to get proof of my NCB for my Porsche. I phone up CIS - 'Sorry, you have to cancel the policy on your Peugeot before we can send you the proof of NCB'
I then phone up Footman James and tell them the situation - 'Sorry, you can't use your NCB on two different policies - you will have to pay another £350 if you want to start with 0 NCB'
So do you think if I ask Footman James for a quote on the Peugeot they might give me any discount as I already have a policy with them for the Porsche??
Bloody insurance companies!

Always worth asking. They can always say no, at which point you thank them politely for their time and go off and insure with someone else next year who's a bit more helpful. If you don't ask, you don't get!
There used to be a policy called Family Fleet, advertised int he back of Sprint in recent years. It was ideal for several vehicles, but was underwritten by Independent who went 'phut'. I don't know if anyone else does a similar scheme. Incidentally those poor folk who paid their premiums just before they went phut found themsleves uninsured and with no compensation/back-up scheme.
Now why didn't I go into insurance when I left school?

OK so if you have one car with say 5 yrs NCB, every year as a part of your renewal quote they send you a NCB statement. What would stop you going to A.N.Other insurance company to insure a different car, and telling them you have 5yrs NCB, supplying them with the proof renewal statement from your first car..? (whilst having renewed your first car anyway with original insurers)
Cheers
Matt.

There's also the one they pull where NCD has a limited shelf life. So you can sell your second car, not replace it for a while, and then find you cannot use the NCD you 'earned' when you come to buy another runabout.
NCD's generally have a shelf life of 2 years from date of policy expiration. If they are telling you different they are taking the pi$$.

Help!!!
I've got a TVR Tuscan and I have just bought a second car as a commuter car (Peugeot 406).
Imagine my surprise when I phoned up for insurance to find out that:
1) I could not have two cars on one policy,
2) The second car must have a new policy, and all no-claims bonuses I have don't count on the second policy!!!!
As a result I have been getting ludicrous quotes - most of them MORE expensive than my Tuscan Insurance.
has anyone else out there had this problem and/or got a solution?
I had the same problem. Wanted to insure a new Elise (a second car), but it had to be a new policy, thus starting with zero no claimes. - very expensive.
But ended going to Elephant.co.uk they did a thing called a mirror policy & took my full no claimes from my BMW and used it for Lotus also (as long as I ensured both cars with them. Not bad cause the BM's insurance was also cheaper through Elephant.
Give them a try.
