Difficult to say exactly how much as depends on usage but definitely check every month or 1000 miles max and expect to add at least a litre.
That's completely typical oil consumption for a 500, but massively more than normal for a healthy 400 or 450. The 500s use substantially more oil, I'm told it's because of the missing oil control ring.
Can only go on my experience. But IIRC my 390SE (owned from new for ~30K miles) and 450SE (owned from new for over 60K miles) definitely used as much as either Griff 500. The only one that may have been less was the 350i, but that's at the limit of my memory!

I have had my RV8 4.6 rebuilt, and have been running it in to the tune of 2500 miles (spec in profile).

It turned out the rear main seal had been nicked when installed, and was leaking, so have had it sorted, but the engine still seems to be using oil...

I am trying to measure consumption over miles - but was wondering what I *should* be expecting..?

In an *average* engine how many miles should I expect the engine to lose say 1 litre of oil..?

cheers,

Dom
V8 rover lumps using mobile 0w40w fully synthetic will burn oil 1/2 ltr every 1000/1500 miles, use semi synthetic 15w 40w 1 ltr every 4000 miles.

A full set of rings... Same ones for 400, 430, 450, and 500
Sorry I missed the end of this thread. Now I'm baffled. The person who told me this knew what he was talking about and is unlikely imo to have been wrong, but it was over a decade ago and entirely possible I've got muddled in the meantime. I know the 500 has shorter pistons, anecdotal evidence suggests that they typically use substantially more oil, and in my mind I have connected this to the explanation about the missing ring - which until this week I was sure was about the TVR 500 but apparently wasn't.

I find the type of driving effects the oil comsumption on my 450 more than anything and possibly not in the way I expect. After long m/way runs, cross country A roads with liberal use of the right foot it seesm to hardly use any. However if I end up doing alot of stop start town driving it ses more. I can only assume due to the engine temps when sat in traffic being that bit higher and the oil being therefore that bit thinner. Still doesn't help the OP with how much is normal!

Pete, who told you this little gem? Does he fit pistons in from underneath per chance?

4.5 piston rings are not the same has 4ltr 4.3ltr or the 5ltrs ,4.5 ltr are thinner on top and middle rings
