A thanks to all of you for your advice/opinions/experiences. I thought I'd send a response just to let you know what I ended up doing.

In the end I found that It didn't really make much difference which car was the main car and which was insured with limited mileage. I couldn't transfer my No-claims to another policy, or get an introduction bonus due to my recent claims (a BIG thanks to the lady who reversed out of her car parking spot without looking earler this year).

In the end, I just had to get lots and lots of quotes from different insurance companies to get a good deal. I managed to get the second car insured for £980 (still not cheap), but combined with my good Tuscan premium, I can't complain. Hopefully next year will be a cheaper affair!!!

When I was with Bell Direct (same company as Admiral and Elephant) they had an on going offer where you could bring a 2nd car to the policy and they would match your existing NCD. I didn't opt for this because I didn't have a second car at the time.

I did ask a few questions though, like if you decide to take one or both cars elsewhere (even the 2nd car on its own) would they give you proof of NCD for the 2nd car. They said they would.

Not sure if they still do this but it may be worth checking out.

We insured our new (to us!) TVR and our existing runabout with the same company last year (TVR Insurance on the PH Links pages - Norwich Union scheme through A-One Insurance, Bournemouth), using our full NCB for the TVR to reduce the premium to something bearable. This year, because we wanted agreed value for the Tiv without the car being garaged 365 nights of the year (it's a long story!) we moved to an insurance company who would let us do this (not many about), and took the NCD on the Tiv to the new company whilst maintaining the runabout with full NCD on the original policy through A-One. This apparently is the 'mirroring' bit. Rather strange now having only an elderly Golf insured through a TVR insurance specialist, but it was the cheapest way to do it!
