Austec Racing?
Discussion
No, it was 1 of 3 E21 BMW built by TWR back in the early 80's. In fact, all 3 examples still survived until Austec ''lost'' the first. It isn't my place to give too much detail but it's terrible how poorly the owner has been treated. The car itself would be worth £40k+ today and he'd handed over £20k for the work they were supposed to have completed. Were it my car, I would be pursuing criminal charges being brought, as he was clearly conned.
A bit of digging and it's clear the Austec name is still around on MX5 race cars and the transporter. Oh and the hoardings offering ECU mapping franchises with Austec Racing.
It must be nice to have the cash to go racing. Shame he doesn't see fit to repay some of his debts.

Understand the sensitivity of detail/opinion on a public forum but from what you have basically said it should trigger a criminal investigation at the very least. Other evidence/victims may come to light. Why hasn't your friend reported it ?I'm hoping he will.
Unfortunately, he's had a tough time of late and it may be one financial burden too far. Having seen emails he's sent / received over the past few years, he has simply been strung along in the hope he'll just forget about / write off the debt. It is for that reason I have offered to take the matter on for him for free. At the very least I hope he will put his story out into the public domain. (He works in media) At least then people will see this guy for what he is.
Meanwhile, I'd like to know the story behind the pony tail.

But from what you have said it could be a criminal rather than civil case so he's not facing a significant bill. If only for the public interest and protection of others who may face the same in future, I would urge him to hand the file to the BiB and have a chat, even just to establish grounds or otherwise. His insurers certainly aren't going to be a help if he won't report it.Unfortunately, he's had a tough time of late and it may be one financial burden too far. It appears that people like Mr Austec hide behind the whole 'civil' thing and play it to their advantage. My feeling is that he has obtained money through deception and losing a vehicle in his care is is criminal neglect. It would appear there is a long list of creditors, who are owed the money that Mr Austec is using to fund his racing.
I genuinely don't understand how people like Paul live with themselves. It has always been clear that he is more interested in the rolling road business than servicing or repairs but I stopped using him shortly after he messed me about. It doesn't take much for me to realise someone is not really into providing a good service, and Paul doesn't. However he may have 'lost' a car really needs to be properly investigated. Shouldn't take much if the BiB are involved surely? Austec is not the only one at it in the world of TVR, believe me.
I found this thread looking to see what had happened to Austec as Google was showing them as shut and I wanted a remap on my latest purchase. To add a bit of balance to all the negative comments, I used them several times for three different vehicles and always received good, prompt service;
- Vivaro van remap, all good three years later
- Mondeo remap, as above
- rolling road tune for out-the-box Omex equipped Zetec kit car with custom inlet manifold , again spot on and all fine 7 years later.
