RE: Smolenski outlines Veyron-beater
Discussion
What do you think the total R&D spend was in creating the Veyron? If TVR had that sort of money washing around looking for a good use, do you think it would be in its present state? Following the plight of the workers here on PH and in the press, this just seems like bad taste.
I am so chuffing bored of all of this now
I'm think I'm going to go and drool over the TSO...

they lose more on each veyron than his company is worth
You believe that?
yeah
No idea what TVR is worth but although the BV cost a lot to get to production they will be making a big profit on each car.
no they wont
5 mill per car sell for 800 k
they need to sell 6 times the amount

I would guess that a lot of people with a grasp of the economics of the car industry would believe it too.
If the project had run to time and budget then maybe it might have been theoretically possible to make a profit, but it didn't.

Your own logic defeats you: if the "loss" is 4.2 million per car then if they sell 6x as many they will lose 6x as much. Don't belive throwaway comments by JC on top gear. £11K for an indicator stalk? Get real.

the design costs are the killer
not the cost of the parts and manafacture
is there someone there to look after you
they couldn't even find a wind tunel that works at 300 mph
this is outside the envelope of known development
catching them let alone beeting them will take a monumental effort

I would agree with that but that relates to the overall costs of the project. From your knowledge given that we are now in the production run do you believe that each car costs £5,000,000 to produce? That's over 10x the production cost of the F1 only a few years later for nowhere near ten times the car; I don't believe that VW are that bad at manufacturing.

the 5m per car incorporated all the development etc. So selling 6 times the number of cars will not mean 6 times the loss, it will mean that you recoup more of the development costs.
Yes, in otherwords they make a profit on each car produced. Cheers,
except there arn't that many footballers in the world!!
they cant sell that many at that price
