Is this tyre write off?
Discussion
Not having much luck with these run flats on my 535dm.
This is the 3rd replacement in 4 mths!
The other day found this below sticking only 10mm out of the tyre, the rest was inside.
My Mrs took it to the tyre place and they said it needed to be replaced as its near the wall of the tyre.
I'd only had the tyre one month so I'm wondering if its salvageable??

Mick, you're wrong. That cut is on the sidewall and cannot be legally repaired.

Thanks everyone.
I never said I was going to use it as I`ve already had to buy another tyre. I was asking to see if it was worth anything to anyone and due to it being a run-flat with a reinforced sidewall I thought they don`t suffer from blow-outs.
As it`s not I`ll just bin it. Just pisses me off as it`s the 3rd new tyre within a few months.
I must have only done 500 miles on it!

The biggest problem with run flat tyres is even the industry is split on repairing them or not. BMW say you can, some of the tyre manufactures say now because being a run flat you can't be sure the structure of the tyre is still sound after running deflated. It's a bh I know but at least you have done the right thing.

Cheers. Love the car, I was going to get an M5 but thought this`d be a compromise with economy. Until I`ve spent over 600 quid on rubber in a few months.Half of me says bite the bullet and change to normal tyres.

That simply means you found someone irresponsible enough to do it. The tyre carcass undergoes a lot of flexing at this point, which is why such a repair is a safety risk.cerberaperv said:

That's life unfortunately. Sometimes things go like that.I must have only done 500 miles on it!
You can, apparently, get insurance for punctures which will pay for new tyres. There was a thread about it on here a while ago, but unfortunately the consensus was that it wasn't actually very good value for money. IIRC it was because they'd only cover one claim per corner of the car or some such.
At the risk of incurring the wrath of those on the high moral ground (there are a few here)are we sure that fault can not be repaired? It is a runflat tyre so the sidewalls are stiffer, therefore the shoulders do not flex as much. If this case involved a conventional tyre I would agree that the flexing of the shoulder would render a repair unsafe, but here we have a stiff shoulder. Furthermore the "no repair" recommendation is based on tyres that have been driven while flat but that is not the case here.
