It's Nokian WR D3s that are going on the wife's Golf. Never had Nokian before but have only ever read good things smile
They are fking awesome.

Had them on my S2000 last year, and they allowed me to drive spiritedly on damp roads in sub zero temps. You won't be disappointed.

rsv gone!

I think I'll invest in some Nokian WR A3 for my 330D. Looks like I can match the summer tyres for size.

Much like any early 911 really. But then no one on PH would ever drive such a dangerous car because it might swap ends.

Bill - how often has your friend had his car swap ends?

I'm putting it down to the Passat being very nose heavy. No uneven wear either frown

With other cars I have aged more than the tyres hehe
this is on an S4, hardly nose light!
Very nice car. Only ever been fortunate enough for a ride in a friends S3 and that was awesome. Frightening fuel consumption though.

+1 For the Nokian WR D3'S. I have 4 nice news ones ready to roll. Never used them before as had the Nankang sv's on which although a budget brand worked very well indeed.
The Nokians were £67 each so not too expensive.

Ran Nankang N607 All Seasons on a Suzuki Jimny last winter, absolutely nothing to complain about them.

3 degrees on the way in to work today and the first time I have had to scrape the car this winter.

Bit early, maybe, to put the winter wheels on but it has prompted me to put my old set of wheels for the 95 onto the classifieds. smile

Anyone got any ideas for a snowflake marked tyre to go on an old Range Rover? It doesn't go properly off road, but I wouldn't want to get stuck in a muddy car park with it either. But my main priority is good winter performance. The current (old) Goodyear GT4 M+S tyres are horrendous in snow.

Are any of the "All Terrain" tyres snowflake marked? It seems a very vague subject, where some sizes are and others aren't even though they are the same tyre!

Size is 235/70/16 or possibly 205/80/16.

Thanks!

Has anybody ordered tyres to the UK through reifen.com? The prices seem much, much keener than anything in the UK, and delivery for 4 tyres seems to be 20 Euros.

To be honest, having looked around, my usual favourites of event and etyres have struck out having crap choices, and even Camskill have very little in the size I am looking at - 205/55 R16. Standard size should be 225/50 R16 but they are pricey and even worse choice. This way I get the same circumference of tyre and narrower so hopefully better in the snow.

As an example, Nokian WR-D2: Event has them at £380 for 4 fitted, mytyres for just under £350, and reifen.com 317 euros which is exactly £250 delivered. I figure fitting is going to be no more than £50, so still a cool £50 cheaper than the next best...

Too good to be true?

PS, current mid-price favourites? I am looking at Nokian WR-D2, Falken HS449 Eurowinter (less than £50 a corner on reifen), and Bridgestone Blizzak LM32. Anything else worth considering - decent wet performance very important given our usual winters, no point in driving on something rubbish unless it's 3 inches deep in snow!

205/55 R16 must be one of the most common sizes I would have thought?
You are probably benefitting from the good exchange rate if you are buying in Euros.

A few posts back Jon published a comprehensive test so it might be worth reading that. FWIW I use Goodyear Ultragrip 8 in that size and they are excellent in both snow as well as the more usual wet conditions. In fact they leave very satisfying lines up a wet road! They are a few years old now so probably no longer made, but they weren't too pricey at the time.

Has anyone had any experience of the Nexen Winguard tyre? For the first time ever I'm actually getting some winter tyres fitted because my commute is now longer (and has some twisty, rubbish roads) and my current tyres are worn. I'm having them fitted on Friday.

I've been fortunate in that someone has kindly given me the tyres so it isn't costing me anything. However, are they a death trap? smile

Oh yes, is Friday too early to get them fitted?

Thanks.

I've got Winguards on my Nissan. I thought they were very good last year in the cold. There was certainly a big difference between sub 7°C performance and anything over 10°C though. Tread gets a bit "squirmy" at higher temperatures.

But in the cold I found them very good. A decent amount of grip available and were very good in the wet also. Since it didn't snow last year I can't comment on that though...

Not used them, but see if pneusonline will pricematch them (and beat by 3%)

<being pedantic> It actually snowed lots and lots last winter (the below pic was taken in January). But I know what you mean, the majority of lower lying parts of the UK didn't see anything.

I'm not sure I've linked this yet, but after the past few winters, I'm now pretty much convinced the best winter tyre for the UK is an all season tyre.

They just work better for our range of temperatures and surface conditions (mostly warm to cold, dry and wet), and they're 90% of a winter tyre, so still about 4 times as good as a summer tyre on snow.

They're German, so I would expect nothing but top-notch service from them (I now order from Germany in preference to the UK (who IME will take your money and THEN tell you there is no stock). Also recommend mytyres and Oponeo (who are either German or Polish).

Stuff seems to come in 2 days.

Thanks Jon. I'm sure for the bulk of UK drivers on the daily commute/school run/Sunday day trip these would make the most sense. I noticed the big Fiat 500 things for sale at our local Fiat garage are on Vector 4 Seasons.
