To put some context on my take on the current situation with body shop pricing.....a friend of mine recently managed to drive over a large log in his Skoda Octavia in a country park and dented the sill....the dent repair plus sill repaint, including 3/4 panel paint and blending into doors was just over £2.5k.....getting a whole car resprayed to a decent quality for £3k or even £5k, unless mate's rates is simply not realistic IMO. 15-20 years ago maybe, not now.I have a couple of bodyshops that I've used over the years. Tough criteria that , try posting in Car Buying , you might attract ZX10 who will rattle off a list of suggestions im sure . I think it would be easier to respray the car! Be an idea to get suggestions for decent bodyshops in your area then go & see them, tell them what you are thinking of doing & ask them to give you an idea as to what they would charge.

Get a X3 ordered to your spec, in your colour (BMW's range is quite large) and either the 30e or M40i/M40d will all be potent enough.

I don't know if the bodyshop in question does insurance work (i assume they all do to survive) but this was a local bodyshop to him in Devon (With a good reputation locally) and works not being completed through insurance.....The point I missed is that OP wants a non-standard colour, so the option of just changing the car isn't really there.
If he is keeping it for a long time and it's his money to do with what he wants anyway, I really don't think a £2-3K blow over is what he wants.
A wrap really is a more viable alternative and just accept that you will be able to see it is a wrap.
