First thing I've ever won! Apparently it's called a Vauxhall Equus and I agree, it looks great. I'd very happily drive that
Thank you for the honour, I'll go research
Can anyone tell us who came up with this one?
All I know is that I want it

Hmmmm.
The styling is very Ital design. The pedals are VW suggesting that the mechanicals are VAG. But the interior column stalks and instrument fonts are 90's Fiat Group.
I'm going to plump with Ital Design. No idea what it is called, but I imagine its some sort of re-bodied Golf (Mk 2???)

You're pretty much spot on. It's the Orbit and is mechanically all Golf mk2. That one is apparently based on the Syncro and there was a version based on the GTI that was even cooler:The styling is very Ital design. The pedals are VW suggesting that the mechanicals are VAG. I was prepared to accept Italdesign or Volkswagen
Anybody remember this?
I remember it doing the rounds of the European motor shows at the time. I saw it at Geneva, and managed to blag a look inside as someone had left a rear door open and got distracted by another person.
It was enormous inside, with a veritable ballroom of a rear seat area, and a steering wheel covered in buttons and controls.

Who produced this prototype in the '70's?
Is this a trick question?Who produced this prototype in the '70's?
It is indeed the Vauxhall Equus (you'd expect me to know that, though, wouldn't you), but the only one built was actually built by Panther, on a Lima chassis.
ETA: Oh, and the one above is the Lancia Medusa by Giugiaro

Looks like a Reliant Scimitar SS1 to me. Does anyone here know if they're related?
No, they're not: the Equus was designed by Wayne Cherry (who had links to Panther in that he was also responsible for the slightly earlier Panther 6).The Scimitar SS1 was a Michelotti design (and the arguably better looking Scimitar SST/Sabre was re-worked by William Towns).
Yes, it is indeed the Lancia Medusa - the answer to a question that nobody asked really in that it was a capacious five seat saloon with no luggage space at all, because it was based on the mid-engined Lancia Beta Monte Carlo, with a stretched wheelbase and brilliant internal packaging.
It was a fully running prototype as well, albeit some of the interior appointments were non-operational.
