The surface rust on the RS16 looks like its been left somewhere damp recently, probably needs a dam good run.

I thought works Twinks from that period had the rear upright turrets for the long travel shocks ?
Found this car in GR's book, one of the few with no photos,,,,,,,,,,,,,, pity.

Anyone else notice the sagging rear part of the exhaust system and think, "why did you not tuck that up" for the photos!

Maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy wink
Thing is a mess doubt it would of had those top mounts and they certainly would not of omitted the butterfly stops below the central mounting nut , prep pre paint looks awful too frown dreaded tin worm getting busy already

Who is Cal withers ?
Owner of Withers of Winsford.

Had good contacts with FoMoCo, and were a big RS parts (new and used) back then and right into the mid 1980's. Cal bought a LOT of ex-works cars from Boreham, and broke most of them for parts. Withers sponsored quite a lot of rallycars, stage and road events back in the day, and used to have big ads in the back of Muttering Screws. He was a real 'old school' second hand car dealer type, but a walking dictionary of knowledge. I got on OK with him back in the 80's, (many didn't though) and had many an interesting chat on the phone and at AVO club meets.

Yeah, now very vague memory cells are thinking Cal passed away sometime in the early to mid 90's....as I was either still a AVO OC member or not long ceased being a member, and I think I was last a member in 94/95 ish?

CW only passed away last year or maybe 2019.

The silver/maroon RS1600 is a nice thing, early BB49 car and correct switches etc.

Aah OK, not sure who I'm thinking of then......?

CW must have been knocking on a bit then, even if it was 2019, as he must have been in his early 50's back in the early 80's...?

A friend's Father bought a brand new painted and trimmed TC shell from Withers in 1971, Ermine with the round lights of course. He built it into a Mexico for rather less than the £1000 Ford wanted in 1971. Cal remembered them and said he'd bought a job lot from Halewood. The W-o-W adverts in Muttering Nudes was proper kid/sweet shop stuff.

Yes 're rear tailbox on twink!
Thought at first glance rs16 with log book and presumably substantiated broadspeed history was interestingly estimated - but would like to see a basic spec of motor listed - cos if it's a stock or lightly breathed on cooker it is sort of at odds with the rest of car and what you might want to do with it. 're the surface rust - yes does look as if it has been in a damp place for a while. Engine bay photo turned me off a bit - I might have invested a few quid in some new trumpets and return springs and cleaned carb bodies just to make it look a bit more presentable if I was going to send it over the block to draw good money. That said like everyone else - I'd love to own it and get saddled with another moneypit with potential!

What a fabulous thread, just spent most of the day reading it.
Owning a hot Mk1 or 2 Escort has always eluded me for some reason.

But have owned most of the other stuff mentioned.
My first quick car was a Mk2 Avenger Tiger in wardance red, the previous owner hade removed the stripes and rear spoiler, so it was a bit of a sleeper. My plan was to turn it into a rally car but work and financial issues at the time put a stop to that.
The Kadett C Coupe GT/E and Rallye E were in directed competition with the RS2000 but never sold well in the Uk.
I did have a GT/E for a while the getrag dog leg gearshift was a bit strange au first but once you got used to it.... it was fine.
Only 24 GT/E’s were officially imported into the Uk by the late Tony Fall, just a handful remained as road cars. The 2.0 Rallye E was available through your general Opel dealership, but way more expensive than the fords.
The ZF box in the Sunbeam Lotus was way more clunky than the Opel, certainly all the ones I tried were although it with the torque available starting in second wasn’t an issue.
Owning an RS now will just be a pipe dream looking at their value now.
Two Escort facts popped into my head, someone once said to me, you can always tell the fast Mk1’s because they had the six dial dash..... not strictly so..as mentioned the later XL did and if memory serves
The early Mk1 1300 Sport had the standard two dial dash with a pod mounted rev counter.
The other odditie was the Mk2 4 Door 1600 L my uncle had one as a company car identical to the Sport but in L trim.
Rose tinted spectacles has a lot to answer.

Those Kadett GT/Es were a pretty rare car so you’re lucky to have experienced one

Tony Fall later of “Safety Devices” fame. Lovely bloke to deal with, sadly missed.

I presume the same Getrag 'box as fitted in the HS Chevette? If so, did it have the same 1:1 direct top 5th gear like the HS Chevette, or was 5th an o/d ratio like the ZF in the Sunbeam-Lotus?

5th was a 1:1 in the GT/E

Approx 18.59 mph per 1000 rpm

Same box as the HS then.

Yes as far as I know, it was. Not that familiar with the HS .... that’s another one that escaped me.

The Chevette *may* have used a Getrag 265/5 'dog leg' with the close ratios and 1:1 fifth. The small 235 is more likely, shared astray were with the BMW E21 and some 2002's. These had detachable four bolt bellhousings and were, along with the overdrive 265/6 based on the four speed Getrag 262 as used in the 1968 BMW 2500/2800. 265's have 262 cast into the main castings and fifth was added by using a sandwich casting between the main casing for fifth gear, and the end section with the speedo drive. The 265 five speed was used in the Vauxhall 2300 FE cars around 76-78. BMW used the box extensively from 78-84 on various M30 engined cars and as a close ratio 265/6 in the E30 M3. Jaguar used it on the 3.6 XJS and XJ40 and Opel used it in the Royale/Monza. The removable bellhousing made it very adaptable.

Yes, the HS used the 235.
