Perfect except for the price £8200 on eBay, room for negotiation perhaps.

I’d forget the tax exemption, much more restrictive. And pretty much any 40+ year old car at your budget, if used every day, will quickly become a major money pit. The longevity of many of them was rubbish even when they were new!

Try a wanted ad on the scimitarweb forum. You don't have to be a club member to join. You might twist the arm of someone thinking about selling but who had not go around to getting an ad up - put your location.

Scimitar owners club is a great club. Great knowledge, friendly members, spares support, good magazine - everything you could possibly hope for in a car club.

I don’t think the Scimitar is a good car for a Lab - getting in would involve jumping in through the rear window. The access to the rear is very limited, with a high lip. You need a proper estate. Audi S2 would be good, if you can find a good one.

...an Audi S2 for £4,500, I'll take 10 of them please!

Agreed. I had a scimitar and a young retriever and it was not comfortable for him.

In the end I bought a BMW E30 Touring which was perfect.

How about a Renault 4?

Yes, as long as you like them 'in need of attention'.....because the OP's budget is at the rough end of Amazon estates prices.
Ah no, you see, I took budget creep and man maths into account.

I must admit I've not been keeping an eye on S2 avant prices frown

Not tax exempt, and some may say not yet a classic, but how about a mk3 Golf VR6?

Low(ish) loading lip for the dog, quite reliable and values rising for tidy ones.

Renault 4 is a good option but getting a good Renault 4 in the UK is harder than finding a needle in a haystack i'm afraid and the few that come up for sale are either in showroom state and very pricey or absolute rust buckets!

Rover SD1? Nice one on Car and Classic for £4.5k. 1979 so tax exempt.

2.6 in white. Looks like a nice one.

If it's a GS wagon ("Break"), else it needs to be a GSA if you don't want to stuff the dog in a boot :-)

I can't imagine there are too many rust free GS(A) around in the UK.

404/504 wagon?

People over the road have one. It's still in regular use. Think i posted a pic in the Cool Classics thread. My Dad had one when i was very young.

Black Lab? Volvo 145 e.g. http://car-from-uk.com/sale.php?id=101428 No connection with the seller, buy carefully.

Manual with o/d would be preferred
