Maserati/Ferrari F136 4.2/4.7 V8 - lovely revvy engine, great noise and power delivery, and surprisingly robust for its sophistication. Available for (relative) pennies in Maserati format...

No mention, as yet, of the Ford-Cosworth BDA - 16-valve, 2OHC, high-revving, the most successful rally car engine of all time.

What's not to love ?

Is it? I thought it was the Fiat/Lancia Twin Cam?

Great lump though so definitely agree with you there.

Jaguar 5.0 Supercharged v8 - powerful yet still resolutely analogue in its sensations.

Am I allowed to nominate a single race car engine ? In which case - V16 BRM.

If not - sorry - I'll scurry back into my man-cave.

I remember an article about this engine / car in Fast Lane in the 90’s along with an interview with Tom Wheatcroft at Donington.

What a car, place and bloke !

Another vote for the XK, obviously.

The title doesn't say anything about it being a car engine, so I'm surprised no one's mentioned the Merlin. The sound of which still send a tingle down the spine.

Then the Imp's engine. Revs to the sky and back yet light enough you could pick up the complete long engine/transaxle assembly.

The Austin Healey 3000 engine. Not particularly powerful, but the noise from it flat out raises hairs on the back of my neck !

The Ford Essex 3.0 V6 found in the Capri UK.

Not massively powerful but hilariously torquey from tickover and a brilliant soundtrack in twin system set up.

The 3.0 had the charisma that the 2.8i just didn't.

(A little ironic given my username)
