Incidentally, I spoke to the owner today to buy a used drivers door glass for my 69 off him that he had in his loft.
There was absolutely no suggestion it was and no reason why it should be, but imagine it was the original glass from DR’s car before it was restored?!
I won’t ask as I’m sure ill be disappointed but you can dream can’t you!
Having a slight flush at the thought; very, very pretty lady.

Well, as he said, it’s been very difficult to find out exactly how the car was used. He has invoices, letters and a marti report showing the car was one of the 3 cars used in the film (2 survived).
It’s very likely it was the one used in the barn scene filmed at Pinewood and possible it was the one from the beach scene at the start. No one knows for certain about either anymore.

I didn’t realise that 3 Cougars were used. But if one was shot @ Pinewood, then it would most likely have stayed in Britain after filming ended.

Be interesting to know, just why a Mercury Cougar was chosen ?

Probably 3 for the 3 seperate filming locations, so one in the UK at Pinewood, one in Portugal for the beach and Estoril hotel scenes, and one in Switzerland for the winter scenes, and the ice race, which was probably the one that got trashed and scrapped by Ford afterwards....?

A good theory, but just to throw a spanner in the works the other survivor was in Sweden for the first 20 years I think. It must be this one that was in the Bond display in Covent Garden a couple of years ago. It wasn’t in great condition but didn’t seem to have any serious dents although it did have an authentic looking ski rack on the trunk.
Is this the Portugal one with a later added ski rack and then found it’s way to Sweden or did the Portuguese one get ruined by salt and mad driving?
No records seem to have been kept and it seems anyone who would know for certain is probably dead now and tbh no seemed to know for certain or care much almost straight after filming stopped.
It does seem very likely that this is the barn scene one and it is certain that only 2 out of 3 survived.

That doesn't mean much, as the Swedes love their American cars, and many have ended up there over the years....any visit to annual summer Big Power meet at Lindkoping will testify to that with 20,000 odd US cars attending.

It’s only a guess but maybe it was used because the convertible was a new model that year, it was designed to be a luxury sports car designed with European influences and so suited the characters wild but sophisticated style?

Nice thought......but more likely just a case of Ford offering them for free, as part of the deal for supplying all the Escorts for the ice race.

I don’t think so. The owner was telling me he has a report confirming the details of the sale from Lois Eminger and the Marti report with supply details.
I’m sure they would have got a decent discount though smile

Do you mean the original sale of them to the Bond filming company?

I’m not sure tbh. You have to remember I only had a 20 minute conversation with the owner about all things Cougar and it was only half way through that the penny dropped that he was the owner of one of the Bond cars.
As I understand it, there’s no original records in existence anymore. However there is the Marti report and a report from Lois Eminger (“the invoice lady”) which confirm it is one of the Bond cars.
What this report says exactly I don’t know.

I would say then, that report from Lois likely confirms they were Ford supplied to the Bond production company, rather than the Bond people buying them from a dealer. We know Ford were thanked at the end of the film (supplied all the Escorts for the ice race sequence) so I would find it most unusual if Ford were involved to that level and didn't supply the 3 Cougar's as part of that 'deal' (as I suspect they had supplied the Mustang, Thunderbird & station wagon used in Goldfinger) and later the Mustang and other cars for Diamonds Are Forever, plus its believed Shelby were involved in some prep work on either all 3 or at least one of them.

Here’s another photo he sent me off recent prep work for the auction. I dont think I’m betraying any confidence -he sent them to me with no caveat attached, and at the end of the day, it’s all publicity for the sale

Very nice, far beyond the reach of my pockets.
My 69 Cougar is one of the few cars I regret selling.

The 69 Cougars, especially convertibles, had a nice style about them that gets better with age.

Ford had a long assocoiation with Bond but i doubt it was only a freebie for publicity. I bet the art director had definite ideas on the sort of car a jet-set trust fund babe like Tracy would drive.
