…apart from the wheel arches which aren't squared off like the original picture.

This? I'm of the opinion the actual front of the mystery may be obscured by something at the back of the car in front.

I was thinking that. There's also something very odd about the front bumper and bonnet profile on the off side.

Also, why is the quaterlight showing a reflection, but not the door window. Or, if it's a view through the quaterlight, why are the rest of the Windows black. Apologies if this has already been pointed out.

ETA ignore that last bit, in the original pic on page 1 the Windows are transparent. It's just the blown up pic which looks different.

This is a slightly different version of the same car with squarer rear arches.

The mystery car doesn't appear to have that swoopy side though.

No, could be it's not visible in the pic. It's less noticeable when looking at the car side on.

It isn't obvious in the first pic I posted either.

It's going to turn out to be something stupidly simple like a Spridget with an Ashley hardtop, isn't it ?

No no no no - Spridgets have just a frame windscreen - no A-pillar.

The mystery car is nothing like the curved car above - Mysterycar has a straight rear wing, with a clumsy roof line that comes crashing down onto that straight rear wing.

It's as close as some of the suggestions we've had so far wink (but the roofline is too well done, and the rear wheelarch doesn't come down far enough, for it to be one).

This looks quite close but the rear wheel arch is wrong. Its a 1959 Alart and is the only one made.

Not sure if this has been linked to before, but it seems our French brethren are also trying to identify it: http://www.peugeotforum.nl/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1...

Very close in some regards but the space between door and wheel is all wrong as well.

Although it's based on a Simca 8 apparently which does have the squared off arch and similar wheels. Just a shame the proportions are wrong otherwise I'd be tempted to suggest it might even have been a work in progress rather than a finished car.

Has anyone managed to tie the year the photo was taken down?

It has to be >1955 Due to the DS

My classic cars identification isn't that good though, I see a 4CV and a >1952 Traction Avant. Anything newer than 1955?

No, the original picture was posted in the "period classics" thread.

Or Dutch brethren, even. But they don't seem to have got anywhere either.
