Surely that is photoshopped? That is ridiculous!
Could be the Jag driver is just much better at parking.
The XJ does look good. cloud9

fun couple with those cars, someone could put say a ford escort mk1 or 2 next to it and next to that a lotus elan fhc, to see the differences.

I also thought such jag was nice but big, but compared to such Porsche pfff, lol,

It looks like Turquoise? If so, quite a short-lived and rare colour; a lovely looking car and better looking (IMHO) with the Daimler or XJ12 vertical slat-grille.

No but photos can deceive, as an example the jag is longer than the Cayenne but you'd swear that wasn't the case looking at the photo, the Porsche is 6" wider and considerably taller but you'd expect that.

My favorite daily drive when I'm back home.
Over 4,000kms in 2 months during my last visit.
Scary small compared to the "SUV's"

Looks like this pairing is a thing!

Many would think the GT86 was a relatively small car, but it dwarfs the car that inspired it's design. Incidentally, both are 1:18th scale smile

Perhaps the buyers of today's performance cars drive down different roads.
I had a great drive home from North Wales back to Berkshire earlier this year trying to keep to B roads and minor A roads.
My X150 XKR was a bit big for many of them and I'm sure I'd have been able to drive quite a few more quickly in something smaller.
Maybe most drivers today are more inclined to stick to motorways and trunk roads where girth isn't an issue.
Personally I find hacking down country lanes much more fun.
The Bracknell area isn't exactly out in the sticks but there are plenty of roads round here where passing on coming traffic in the Jag or Lady B8's Merc involves slowing right down and passing gingerly whereas driving one of the kids Up!s I'd not need to back off.

On the contrary, it perfectly encapsulates the purpose of the thread, and illustrates the problem with parking spaces, which are designed to accommodate the cars of yesteryear.

I totally get your point about the increasing size of cars versus the stagnation of parking space sizes but that photo doesn't really demonstrate that. The Morris Minor might have more space but both fit acceptably into the parking spaces.

To many people at the time the 1968/9 Minor (just like my Grandma's thank you) would have seemed a perfectly normal family car.
Similarly the 2013/4 SUV would be seen as a perfectly normal family car.
So to my mind this photo perfectly encapsulates the theme of this thread, cars have got bigger, much bigger over time.

As for parking spaces, I suspect that the average modern car would simply not have fitted into the average parking space of days of yore. When I got a Vauxhall Cavalier (Mk2 E-Reg) as a company car, several of the car parks in Reading had spaces it hardly fitted into. There would have been a lot less free space than there is around that Landrover

Fitting in the space is all well and good, but most cars have doors that open outwards

Took the Saab 95 V4 to Aldi earlier to stock up on weekend supplies. A family car from the 1970s surrounded by family cars from 50 years later.
