Just checking out the brightwork

..those are crazy trousers!

I`m assuming that`s your dad, he bears a striking resemblance to a south African born crooner who was popular in the 1950`s and sixties , my mum had a "thing" about him ! His name is Dennis Lotis .
Indeed he does!!

In the eighties I did a few seasons of Autojumbling. It was an accident. Chatting to the elderly owner of an accessory shop near our house on Hayling Island he looked wistfully round and said if anyone offered him £200 they could have the lot. So I became the owner of a lot of rubbish and a few gems and went autojumbling. Autojumblers themselves are a funny lot, some want you to act as a shop and have everything labelled and priced and others prefer to poke about among your boxes and haggle. One such was a taciturn man with a list. He looked carefully and, I have to say, sadly through all my boxes of bits checking numbers against his list. No luck so far. Last was the large box oil filters. Most of them were motor factor patterns but one or two were original. Then he found it. An original oil filter for a Morris Isis in the original BMC box. He could hardly contain himself. He picked it up, turned it round, glanced over his shoulder (presumably checking for Isis parts muggers), checked the box again, took the filter out, put it carefully. It was a joy to watch. Then he composed himself. “How, er, how much is this one,” he said with as much nonchalance as he could muster. “All the same price,” I replied. “Fifty pence.” His hands were shaking as he paid. At last he gave me his triumphal look and disappeared with his treasure. Just that one incident made all the agro and early mornings of autojumbling worthwhile. Fantastic.
Great story, I can just picture it. Did he have a tweed cap too? smile

We had A Dyane when I was a kid in the early to mid 70's. There were only 2 in Swansea, ours and an orange one. We used to wave at each other every time we passed! Tyres had to be ordered through the Citroen dealers and took a while to come through and when the steering rack cracked we had to go all the way to Reading (or Slough?) to the main Citroen place to get a new one.
Lots of happy memories here, from idyllic picnics with the seats out in mid Wales to the regular marathons up to London to see my uncle.... that was a journey and a half!

This is apparently my grandfather's Morgan family runabout. That's my father behind the open door wearing the Christopher Robin hat. biggrin Presumably my grandparents sitting in front of it. Obviously a day out at a local picnic spot - would be Southampton area, late 1920s.

Were the 'Atomkraft - nein danke' (sic) smiley moniker's applied at the factory, or was it a (mandatory) dealer fit item?

Child of the sixties, you see.

Strangely was listening to some chat in the bar yesterday and apparently just down the road is a 40 yr old 2CV still on its original tyres with very low mileage!

A mate of mine has a box marked "Insight", which is apparently a BMC sales training product for dealers, dating back to the late 60s or possibly early 70s. It has a lot of film strips in canisters, some brief notes and a pile of vinyl albums. Presumably you play the albums and show the slides to accompany the voiceover. I scanned the films, but although I intended to record the albums and make some kind of digital version, I confess I quickly lost interest. Most of the slides are cartoons, but there are one or two actual images here:

As these are undoubtedly copyright BMC I will remove them if anyone thinks there is a problem.

A good old nostalgia post, always of interest. And so far as copywrite goes the responsible folk are probably living out their lives in care homes dotted about 'Burm'in'gum'!

I've had my fair share of BMC/Leyland products as follows;

Passed my test in my Dad's Austin/Morris 1800.
850cc Mini = First own car.
Wolseley 1300
Austin 1800 Mk2
Mini Mayfair (Still got it, at the back of the garage somewhere?).

I reckon the lawyers gave up worrying about BMC and its successive nomenclature a long time ago.

I think that was endorsed by the fact they sold off great names like 'Mini', Clubman and Cooper' to the Gerries hey? They don't like it up-em Captain Mainwaring!!

I think that you'll find that the BMHT at Gaydon (who i believe still own the rights the BMC material) can be very protective over their copyright. Sometimes if asked nicely and if they have no intention of ever reproducing the item, and they feel that the items may be of benefit to enthusiasts (and most importantly that it's not for profit), they may allow limited reproduction.

I have emailed BMIHT to ask. Many publicity photos are specifically marked "copyright free" as the intention is to have them reproduced as much as possible, but as these aren't mine I cannot check as I returned them many months ago. My comment was actually intended just as an aside and I didn't think for a moment there would be problems with such items, but we will see. For now, I have removed the photos.

Hi droopsnoot, I didn't mean to spook you and I don't think that you's have a problem here. I meant that if you were going to reproduce and sell them, then perhaps they might jump on you. I would have thought that the images would be fine here.

I might have over-reacted, but it's a reasonable point and they're not exactly thrilling pictures anyway. As there's a recent interest in people being held accountable for stuff they put on the internet I figured it's best to pull them. In fact I'd delete the post but it would look silly leaving all these other posts talking about it. Just wish I could find a nice picture to post to get things back on track.

Does it mean you are getting old when your first car becomes a 'classic' or is it because my daughter has friends who think I must be old to have owned a classic car from new or am I just old and can not remember how I got old?
My daughter has a friend restoring one of these and he got very interested when I told him I had one from new. We hunted through some old photo boxes and found a picture of me with said car taken on the day I bought it. Here it is, August 1983, my first 'new' car.
