Dad, Grandma and my aunt.

Grandad's collection; the Singer(a Vogue or Gazelle; not sure which), his first caravan and the mobile shop.

It's a Vogue. I take it the mobile shop didn't have to travel long distances - the Standard Atlas was a shocking thing, wallowy and ruthlessly underpowered. Awful.

Just around the village and maybe the surrounding villages, perhaps the odd adventure into Chesterfield for stock. It does make a Commer PA look dynamic, doesn't it? hehe

Originally 948 cc Standard 10 engine then the Atlas Major 1670 cc Vanguard - you wonder why they ever thought it was a good idea to use the 948, surely it would have been more sensible to go straight for the 1670?

That would be the engine from the Ensign, a sort of bargain-basement Vanguard. I wonder if the TR engine would have fitted? Now that would have been an interesting driving experience....

Uncle Bill's Herald and one of Grandma's Corgis(no, her name isn't Lizzie R!)

Grandparents and dad off on a continental tour in the Westminster; Dover, gateway to foreign climes!

Pitstop

On the way back.

Random foreign iron.

Dad hamming it up on a scooter; I think this may have been my aunt's.

Loving the Austin Cambridges. There is one on my drive at the moment!

I've only ever seen one other on the road.

Does it mean you are getting old when your first car becomes a 'classic' or is it because my daughter has friends who think I must be old to have owned a classic car from new or am I just old and can not remember how I got old?
My daughter has a friend restoring one of these and he got very interested when I told him I had one from new. We hunted through some old photo boxes and found a picture of me with said car taken on the day I bought it. Here it is, August 1983, my first 'new' car.
Nice to see this pic. I've got a sunburst red mk1 xr2 in the garage. I've owned it for 20 years now and my uncle bought it new in 1982. Would love to get it back on the road one day!

Hope these are ok, my parents didn't take many photos which is a shame. Dad had a Daimler (sorry dont know the model name but looked like a MK2 Jag. Rotten though, I remember kicking a tennis ball in the street and i went through the sill!
Dad had a friend who used to lend him his cars sometimes, one of which was a Dodge custom van- this would of been around 1974-75. We were told it was the first one imported into the UK, my Mum a few years ago told me the first owner was Jimmy Savile! No idea if thats true but it was an awesome sight back then ,we lived in Brixton and sometimes my Dad would pick us up from school ,all the kids would crowd round.
Anyway heres the pics, sorry Im in them but its all I can find

My Mini pedal car, brother on bonnet (about 1969)

Dads Vauxhall Cresta PB (?) about 1969 on our way to Scotland, me again

My Dad and his friend with the Dodge van used to race carts in the early 70s, think they had Villiers 210 engines, used to go with them , only track I can remember was Hoddesden, me in the first one

and me, Dad, my brother, Dads friend and brother and their son, no idea what the american station wagon is?

Did you pass your m/cycle test on the TV ?

I passed a bike test on my GT 200 , in those days this allowed you to ride any motorcycle or scooter with unlimited capacity. To this day I ride unlimited and unrestricted bikes (legally ) although I never took a test on a motorbike.

I wonder how many other riders benefit from this anomaly.

Love this, as I love London scenes from that time with hardly any traffic. We must be about the same age. smile

Sorry ,OT for a moment, you know ,I'm getting curious about the Dodge van. Long shot i know but I wonder if it has survived the years?
It was a very distinctive looking van. Anyone got any ideas where to start enquiring?

Wanting some "deserted London" pics for a car club magazine I arrived in Trafalgar square at around 5am in mid summer to find it rammed with Japanese tourists. Cue desperate search for recognisably London scenes off the tourist trail.

Best I can do is Leytonstone, 1971. smile

Taken from the 7th floor of the brand new flats we lived in at the time, thankfully pulled down about a decade ago.

Yep, passed my test on the scooter and like you I ride big bikes today (Norton Commando, Honda CBF), never really thought about it being an "anomaly" but seeing the things young bikers have to go through these days we did have it easy. I rode round the block twice (always turning left) and on one circuit the examiner stepped out to signal the emergency stop - that was it , all done in 20 minutes.

I know I've posted these before but here's the TV back in the day and the Norton todaysmile

Marvellous, although I'm interested to know how you finished up with the garage I always intended to have.
