From Portugal in 2000 after return from Le Mans, VM engine died soon after (without a miss)
Next a full restoration and 200 Tdi transplant - a truly bullet-proof RRC
Return to Le Mans in 2011 in full glory
And now in very god company, with 25 years of age and in my ownership for more than 18 consecutive years
(ready for Le Mans again)

Really quite fancy one of these.

What are they like on the motorway? I need something that can cruise in comfort at 90 on motorway.....

Fine at 90kph, the limit is 70mph you know wink

I drove it for a week or so and then sent it for a full restoration. Rolling chassis and full repaint, retrim and mechanical refurb.
The mirrors are fine once you get used to them, the overall vision out of the car is so good you can almost see all around behind you with peripheral vision and the rear view mirror, the A and B pillars are so slight.

I've been using Footman James. I think the cost has been a couple of hundred off the top of my head.

Just got a quote from them, similar amount - the others have all been £1k+...

More questions - are the aluminium upper tailgates stiff enough, and are 205R16 tyres still the favoured choice on the standard alloys?

235s seem more common these days.
I'm having some issues getting my ali tailgate to stay shut. One side will but the other keeps coming undone. Not quite sure what to do but the old, and rusty, steel one always stayed shut.

Mine once it is shut stays shut but it does take some shutting on the one side. Always worried about slamming it too hard. Really must get around to cleaning and lubing the mechanism.

So what is the consensus on the best year to get for a RRC(or as close to one as there can be)? Is is post 90 to get the 3.9 engine and as many mod cons as possible?

The best way to close an ally tail gate is to have a hand each side of the grab handle. Ie just over a shoulder width apart, ignore the handle. It will close perfectly every time then, so long as the latches have been set at each end.

I shut mine with two hands on each side. i.e. it's a two step procedure, rather than me having four hands!
I've probably got them a little bit tight, but it's better than them popping open.

You need to make sure the latches are very well lubed.

I have a replacement alloy tailgate on my 91 RRC I find I have to close it by pushing both lower corners shut, if I just use the handle it doesn't seal properly. also the heated rear window doesn't want to play anymore
