The Maxi was a well conceived, practical, spacious, not bad looking motor, let down by poor build quality, as was much else at the time, and a poor gear linkage. It represented an attempt at advanced engineering when the likes of Fords hadn't moved far beyond sidevalve engines and cart springs. Has anyone here ever driven a 60s Vauxhall Victor with a floor gearchange? That was pretty awful. Unlike you youngsters, I can speak with experience - I owned two Maxis. And an 1800 and two Princesses later on. If I saw a really nice Maxi or Princess now I'd be tempted to buy it - to go with my Prelude Vti and V12 6 litre XJS.

I had a mate back then who was completely Ford obsessed. Four or Five Cortinas, then he had a drive of a mate's Maxi. Within a month he's found a 1750 with twin carbs and was converted. It was a treat to handle compared to the Cortinas. Not as comfortable, though.....

Great photos Mike.
I especially like the superb Costello V8 with its unique "cheese grater" grill.
