The Maxi was a well conceived, practical, spacious, not bad looking motor, let down by poor build quality, as was much else at the time, and a poor gear linkage. It represented an attempt at advanced engineering when the likes of Fords hadn't moved far beyond sidevalve engines and cart springs. Has anyone here ever driven a 60s Vauxhall Victor with a floor gearchange? That was pretty awful. Unlike you youngsters, I can speak with experience - I owned two Maxis. And an 1800 and two Princesses later on. If I saw a really nice Maxi or Princess now I'd be tempted to buy it - to go with my Prelude Vti and V12 6 litre XJS.
How can you say that when in 1975 Volkswagen released the MKI Golf
Err, what about the MK1 Golf. The Maxi was car that the designer was adventurous, and had many revolutionary ideas, but was let down by the fact that the company that was making it couldn't quite get it brilliant. The MK1 Golf was just a little hatchback. It was not adventurous, it was just dull (now, being a classic, it is quite desirable, as long as it hasn't been 'Dubbed'). But by doing that, they couldn't go wrong and there wasn't any major bad points about the car. The GTI was different, as it was a bit more interesting, but that statement speaks for itself as the GTI was different, as it was a bit more interesting. In short:

Golf:
Jack of all trades but a master of none

Maxi:
Could of been a master of all trades, but due to it being a BL car, it had to go wrong on some things.

I really want a Hillman Imp. It's quite an unhealthy obsession for someone my age.

Maserati was designed in-house (but clearly taking a lot from the Giugiaro Quattroporte).

yes and the Zagato BiTurbo's were almost just a bodykit added to the standard car . . . . . and before anybody mentions it, you cant swap the rear lights smile

Here is a 1955 Studebaker President Speedster in "lemon and lime". I am not usually a fan of Americana of this vintage, but this is an elegant design. The engine is, Net sources suggest, a Packard Passmaster 259 cu V8.

I saw one (rover P6) in Bristol on Friday, which had been converted into a convertable. Looked very very cool I thought, bit like a DS decapotable. Wish I'd had the means to take a pic.
