This was it, black, and bought it from a guy who lived in Hemel Hempstead, around the middle of Feb. Got a lift from my old man up there, and it started snowing heavily on the way, but wasn't settling. My Dad left me there as I was going to pop straight around to see friends nearby in Redborn before driving it home, and when I looked out the window to leave my friends at about 11.30pm, there was about 6 inches of snow on the ground and roads..!! Was a slow and entertaining drive back at that hour to west London in a new car laugh Think I got home about 1am.

I did have a look to see if I could see it in the ads in MN from near the time

Watching to see how much that ACA car goes for - not keen on the colour as someone mentioned above but I’m not sure what colour I’d go for after red and black ones

Love looking at old adverts like those - I did a spot of weekend valeting work at Rugby Autocar on Clifton Road many years ago to earn a few extra bob, I can remember the new XR3s etc coming in. The workshop at the back of the dealership was a creaky, draughty old Nissen hut, it's long gone now though and in its place is a modern industrial unit, the Ford dealer is now on the Leicester Road in another part of town.

Signal Orange X-pack. David Burton engine running twin IDF-44's.

Within 10 years it was a Beige Volvo 240DL Estate and lots of baby seats, but good fun while it lasted.

Brilliant

Would have liked an X-pack
Did get some of the X-pack goodies on my black RS2
I.e the twin 44s and big filter on a big valve canned 2.1. Made it a quick car back then
My mate bought a genuine Black X pack from Mike Young's as well. It had all the the proper bits....large fuel tank, 7 1/2 inch alloys, downdraught IDF's with the big airbox, LSD etc..... drove it like a nutter but was well cool.

It just reminds me that in those days if you wanted a half decent competition or fast-road car the only decent source was the classified ads in "Motoring News". Usually sketchy details over 3 or 4 lines, maybe a grainy B&W photo if you were lucky. Most adverts inevitably included the phrases "all the right bits" and "not for the faint hearted".

That was part of the excitement of car buying in those days - you never knew quite what you were going to be looking at until you get there. So plenty of wasted journeys. Then there would be the week or so for the cheque to clear before you got your hands on it…

I recon the X pack in the Mike Youngs advert was my friends black car he bought from him as the spec and date seem to match

Its not on either of those, but that ad for that X-reg Moonstone Series 2 Ti up in Lancashire rings a memory bell....but can't remember if it was before I got mine or one of those that appeared just after buying mine....what dates are those MN's from?

They’re first couple of weeks in Feb - maybe you’d already got your Ti by then

I've Googled Feb 86 snow in Herts/London, and it's coming up with Thursday eve of Feb 6th as the likely date I collected the car from the weather reports?
Which would indicate it was the Wed 5th Feb MN that it was in, unless it was the week before it was in, and it was the 6th Feb that I went back to collect it?
Can't remember now if I viewed beforehand and went back to collect or not. Given its not in that first week you posted, maybe it was week before edition, and I collected it a week later? Its 38 years ago...headache

So it ended up at £25,500. A bit less than I thought. Be interested to hear if it goes for that.

I appreciate the Anglia RS2 didn't quite sell yet, "we'll see what we can do?" from the auctioneer. #
It looks a reasonable buy around that price compared to many advertised examples?

A new video today on the early Professionals RS2000 before Doyle drove a Capri.

Yep, 5th Feb was the first 2 pages of ads - that was the week of my birthday and car shopping was number 1 on the agenda after a winter in the Mk1 1300GT stopgap smile
I’ll dig out the last week of Jan as I have it somewhere and, like yourself, I’d been scouring MN and Trader to see what was about hehe

I'm just beginning to wonder if I bought it out of TV Trader now instead scratchchin

I'm pretty sure though that I'd not bothered looking at TVT by then, especially not for a Ti, but I just can't remember.
I'm pretty sure I sold it through an MN ad in the summer of '88 as well.....but, again maybe memory is playing tricks on me.

It would be a great buy at that price, although personally I loathe Beige. I wonder what it would have fetched if it was in my favourite colour for an RS2000 of yellow.

A bit of further digging on the weather in the south Herts area in that period seems to indicate that the first snow fell the week before, in the eve of Wed Jan 29th.....so if I did buy from a MN ad, it was likely the Jan 29th edition.
I do remember having got it home in the bad snow, I didn't drive the car again for well over a week because of the bad weather, with further snow falls, as I couldn't get it out of our road at home, as it was a hill.

I think so too but couldn’t put up with beige and brown seats. Interesting at the end he said he’d let the 2 bidders know so guess there was only 2 interested bidders which is low for one of these rare cars and talkies up with low bids across lots of nice cars today.

Estimate was 26-30k, so reserve was likely 26k, so if provisional at 25.5k, and was a no sale, you'd have to say seller is making a mistake for saying no to a mere 500 quid.

If it was only £500 from the reserve you would have thought that the auctioneer would have absorbed that through their fees rather then let the sale go.

Maybe they could have met in the middle?

On Bangers & Cash they have at times done that so both parties are happy and the auctioneers get their fee.

I was thinking of making my way over but family stuff got in the way, I'm only an hour away.

Will have a look out for the next sale.
I'm thinking about getting a 'modern' classic up to £5k and they seem to have a few cars in that price range.

ETA
Just looked, next one April.
Hopefully have something by then.
