Here’s some examples of what I have paid for classics over the past 35 years in the order of ownership. All were at least 10 years old when purchased.

1975 Hillman Imp. £750
1971 BMW 2002. £1000
1984 Renault 5 Turbo 2. £6000
1989 Renault GTA Turbo. £6000
1989 Lancia Integrale 16v. £5800
1997 Subaru Impreza 22B. £20,500
1991 Lotus Omega (only 5800 miles). £25,000
1991 Ferrari Mondial T cabriolet. £40,000

The value of the most recent one hasn’t increased, but all the others have, some ridiculously!
1/6 share of an Austin Sheerline 4ltr bought for £20 as our gang's run about. We also shared the petrol bill. Circa 1964.
1936 Morris 8 £6 in 1965
1947 MG TC £240 in 1970
1963 Morgan 4/4 £750 in 1973
But biggest regret was turning down a Matchless engined Morgan 3 wheeler for £17 - 10s as a rear ash frame was cracked. Doh!

However, since as long as I can remember knowing what a car was (and even when I had my Spitfire) the ultimate car for me was a Ferrari......any Ferrari!!! LOL

Finally achieved my dream 10 years ago and not looked back since. People are always astonished that is over 30 years old - or do they mean me? ;-') LOL

Oddly, no. I was born in 1970 so I passed my test in 1987. The cars of my youth were 205Gtis, Mk1 and 2 Golf Gtis, Astra Sr, Sri and GTEs (Mk1 and 2) and such like and none of those feature in my collection.

For some odd reason the classics I added to my collection are, in this order:

1930 Ford Model A Phaeton (in at the deep end of classic ownership and I realise an odd choice. I was 40 when I bought it.)
1964 Alfa Romeo Guilietta Sprint
1961 Jaguar Mk2
1967 Abarth 595
1972 Mk1 Escort RS1600 BDA

I did watch the rallying as a kid so that likely influenced the Escort thing but otherwise I just bought what I liked.

I've often wondered why I never went and bought a 205 1.9Gti as I loved the one I had (E212 UUB) back in the late eighties. I've become more sentimental of late though so if I was building a collection now I may well buy differently.

I should dig out some photos of that poor little car. It had been in the family since it was about 2 years old.

In my motoring career I have two regrets.
1) Having to sell on the Riley
2) Buying a new 206Gti rather than spend the same on a 968 Club Sport.

I was born in '65. The only car I lust after from that decade is a Gordon Keeble. I currently own .....

I like all of these very much, and doubt I'd derive much more pleasure from any of the exotics I occasionally pursue.

49 now, I learned in a 1967 Morris minor, still love them, on my 2nd frogeye sprite (has the first one at 18) would love an early 1990’s Jetta GTi 16v but they are rare as hens teeth in Canada, also love e-types...but no chance on ever owning one!

My Date of Registration is 63

Properly grew up in the 70’s I guess when I literally dreamed about an Aston V8. Finally achieved that dream in 2008 with an 88 model.

I also still have my very first car.

My current stable ranges from car from 60’s through every decade to current

I think my nippers choices are more interesting in so much as they were Born mid to late 90’s but buck the trend and have a mad passion for cars from 70’s 80’s

My last classic was a Sunbeam Lotus in 2016
previous to that was both 10 & 20 valve versions of the ur quattro before that I was an Imp fan.
Now in my mid 60’s and don’t have a current toy.
The one car that escaped me was the Fiat 131 Sport especially in Orange........ finding one now has got to be like finding the Holy Grail.

There might not be any left in the UK!

Not even listed on How Many Left, and although that's not 100% reliable a source, its still not a good indicator that there are going to be that many that might still be sitting in a dry garage/barn for past 30+ years that have dropped off the DVLA computer radar!

She is an unusual woman, they're virtually indestructible. Unless it was a crash, obvs! In which case, I hope she got out ok.

Yeah, they are a touch thirsty, I'll give you that!smile

My two classics come from a time prior to my teenage years.I was born in 1973 and own a 1974 Triumph Stag and a 1979 Porsche 911.The Stag is the car that my Uncle purchased in 1979 and had quite an effect on me as a six year old when he threw my Dad the keys to take me out for a spin.I am fortunate to own the actual car as I purchased it from him in 2011.
Around the same time in my childhood a family friend replaced his Saab 99 Turbo with a brown 1976 Porsche 911 and a high speed passenger ride impressed me so much so that I purchased my own, slightly later, version in 1999.

I'm 21 and run a 1989 Peugeot 405, unless I had the money for a 991 GT3 or something then I couldn't see me owning a car that wasn't 80's/90's/00's. I just think the late 90's/early 00's was the sweet spot for cars. Safer in a crash, engaging to drive, good mix of engines, plenty of kit without being covered in computers, strong styling but without being over styled and still light enough to feel surefooted.

Sadly the dreaded tin worm killed most of them off.... not seen one for sale in years, although there was LHD one knocking about in Ireland a while back.

It was far funnier that that ..like a sketch from Monty Python .. The car was using a bit of water , i suspected an imminent head gasket failure , so booked the car in to local dealership .....then i had to go overseas at short notice for work , so left the car in the drive .... While away , Mrs put her car in for the MOT and decided to take the Lexus , with MIL , dogs and kids to Exbury Gardens about 30 miles away ..

This is how the wife decribed what happened to the car when i phoned home from Iraq

Wife ...."Ive had a bit of trouble with the Lexus !"

Me.. Well its using a bit of water ..thats why i told you not to drive it ?

Wife ..it was such a nice day and we had MIL round ,, so i took the dog and kids to Exbury gardens ( 30 mile drive away )
. we had a great Day , Dog was chasing squirrels .. until it was time to go home ....... pause

Me go on what happened

Wife ... well driving along the M27 on the way home ... The dash borad lit up like a christmas tree ......Then smoke or something started to come out of the bonnet ...and there was a sort of craunching noise ......MIL said it sounded like there was a squirrel trapped under the bonnet !!

Me ..so what did you do

Wife ... Well i couldn't stop on the Motorway ..so i carried on ... but the car was getting slower

Me ... So what did you do

Wife .. I tried to accelerate .. managed to get onto the A31 ... but the noise was getting worse and the car was getting slower ... until it stopped , so i coasted onto the hard shoulder .. But we were lucky because the police were there very quickly ..I told them to be careful because there was probably a Squirrel under the bonnet !!

Me ... crying with laughter .............did you seriously tell the police that ...

Wife .. yes but the police called the RAC ..............and the man said the engine is faulty so the brought the car home on a recovery truck !

I had a good laugh over that ,,,, when i got back ...........engine was seized solid .. i got £60 scrap for that poor lexus it had only 60k on the clock ..

Ive never let the wife drive the Aston ......

hehe

Bloody hell, you're a better man than me, I'd have gone into orbit! laugh Ours is maybe worth 3k, and we talk of replacing it, but I could spend 10 times what it's worth and end up with a worse car. My other half loves it fortunately, so it'll stay for as long as Newcastle city council don't force our hand with emissions laws.

I used to live quite near to where your other half had her disaster, I moved onto a houseboat on the Hamble in '98, by 2001 I was getting tired of it continually sinking and bought a house nearby and ended up staying in the area until 2016.

I used to go to the PH meets at the Meon Hut on the A272 near Loomies the bike caff, and a couple of others, one at a pub whose name I forget off J1 of the M27 and a breakfast meet at Lyndhurst just off the one way. Happy days as Goodwood was only half an hour away, I miss doing all of that stuff.

some fantastic pubs around Lyndhurst , one of the best if you like a great steak pie is at the New Forest inn ( Emery Down ) " Dave Penny Pie " ... & Royal oak outside Beaulieu .. I first met the landlord ..... Reginald Chester Sterne...........you couldn't forget a name like that while working for Shell in Siberia ... then discovered he lived 20 miles away in the New Forest !!!

he did a runner from that pub ..... probally in OZ now
