Is that strange headlight on the car or something chrome on the back of the other car

Said it before, but I’d wager that there’s a Panhard Dyna under there.

Is it a variation of this? Marathon Corsair... it has the upright windscreen and the three bits of side glass.

Based on Panhard Dyna innards too.

Looking at the higher res image it appears to be part of the mystery car.
I looked at the types of luggage carriers on the car in front, they didn't tend to have chrome bits like that.
More like a wire rack type of thing.

I've sent a link to this thread and a copy of the image to the editorial desk at Classic Car Weekly, a mag which features period pictures with interesting cars picked out such as this below. I'll report back any news.....

Yeah, scroll down this page

And there's a whole bunch of 'My God that's it!', then you look back at the picture and realise one part of it is wrong, then another has the rear arch right and not the headlights, etc.

Has anyone put this on Autopuzzles yet? They have some pretty diehard enthusiasts.

Yes. The response was deafening in its silence. Not a sausage.

(Like a previous suggestion, I also think it's a homebuilt on a Panhard or 4cv chassis. Thus we will never know.)

I think we're more likely to invent time travel before finding out what this car is.

At least then we can go back in time and slap the b*stard who owns this car!

I think this thread is proof that we won't invent time travel in our lifetime, otherwise someone would have gone back to find out its identity, take a better photo, and post it in this thread. And then the same thing with the other long-running mystery car in the classics forum.

there were some prototypes by Jean-Pierre Wimille about at that time which look similar, and it also looks similar to the Hotchkiss / Gregoire and the Gregoire turbine car that sits in the Le Mans museum.

There are so many cars which are similar, with that same style of wheel but nothing I can find that is the same.....
