There's some fantastic imagery out there, I just came across these whilst looking for some other period stuff....

Tom Jones and Englebert Humperdink's manager Gordon Mills with his SIII RR Continental Flying Spur, apparently before dipping his toe into showbiz he was a doctor in the Rhonda valley....

I agree, but would like to understand the business of image banks better. There seems to be vast archives sitting doing practically nothing behind paywalls.

Some appear public-friendly like Shutterstock, where you can buy an image for "personal use" (fnarr fnarr) for a reasonable sum, tens of pounds. Others like Getty have rates so outrageous and terms of use so unfathomable and restrictive I cant understand how magazines and websites bother with them.

Background is, almost every village has a voluntary fire brigade which has at least one vehicle and a fire station, starting from the size of a bigger garage. The first vehicle they have in their pool is some kind of van.

Fighting fires has become more of a theoretical mission since telephones are widely available and fire engines (from council services) can travel many villages far in a couple of minutes.

The voluntary fire brigade is more of a social club (besides churches and shooting clubs) where locals meet and Walts are being integrated into society at an early stage.

These vans are used only for training, transporting beer to the Feuerwehr Fest, and helping a cat down a tree once per year. Typical examples are being replaced after 30...40 years not because they are used up, but because they can't find a workshop to keep them repaired. Usually, they have between 10 and 40k km on the odo.

Whenever I come across a Mk1 Transit Haynes manual it pretty much always sells straight away. I take that as a sign that there are still plenty about.

Love that low mileage LWB LHD ex-fire van.

As the ad says, that's ripe for a Boreham style conversion into a period service barge.....just needs an Essex V6 and the 4-spd + overdrive gearbox from a Mk.IV Zodiac. (that may not be easy to find though)

We had a few at Old Oak depot in the '80s for shuttling back and forth to Paddington every hour or so....

Thread deviation. The Mk ll Transit was notorious for rust. My Mk ll was no exception laugh

It needed them the way the chap in the photo drove it (his nickname was 'side saddle'), he scraped a fair bit of the armco on the A40(M) sometimes!

My MK2 SWB had several rust holes at 11 years old. But vans in daily commercial use were worn out before then anyway.

It's been yonks since I saw an old Transit, even a 2nd gen, let alone a mki or mkii. Ditto LDV 400's or Convoys.

Yes indeed, that looks a bit ropey along the bottom of the doors and the sill area.
