Not the usual sort of view but some preventative work on the 968 included replacing the cam chain that sits in the head. It sits on a pair of tensioners that start white and smooth and after a couple of decades look like these…

Wouldn’t have wanted these to go for too much longer.

I've seen worse. The guides are discoloured but still intact and would still have been doing their job.

Well done for changing them though. I presume that you did the belts at the same time.

Yep, still doing their job but a worthwhile thing to do as there was no record of them having been done in the otherwise very extensive history. Timing belts had only been done back in Oct by previous owner.

Also changed this time were a few hoses…

Original top/bottom hoses…

…and original fuel hoses…

All still working fine and doing their jobs after being on the car for nearly 29 years, if properly caked hard and, for the coolant hoses, almost split where the jubilee clips had been holding them.

Also changed was crank angle sensor as the multi plug almost crumbled when removed and wires also baked hard…

I ran these two at the same time for a few years in the 90s.

The Turbo Esprit was always my bedroom poster car and owning one was fabulous. Everything about it was as good as I'd hoped it would be every time I drove it. I still think they look otherworldly.

The Midget on the other hand was a huge mistake. It was an impulse purchase agreed on a warm summer's evening after a great weekend of pottering around the Lancashire countryside in it enjoying country pubs and getting gently sun burnt. That nice feeling never happened again and I think I disliked everything about it.

Takes all sorts

An interesting pair. I had a JPS Andretti Esprit (being restored by a member on these pages) and couldn't get on with it. Some years previously I had a Midget and absolutely loved it!
As you say, it takes all sorts.

Is that one of the new retro style Blaupunkt stereos? Are they any good? I am wondering whether to blow £400 on a stereo in a car I rarely use.
I am wondering the same thing, I have the original Blaupunkt Cambridge M23 in my '81 500 SEL and the tape deck doesn't work properly, I can get it Bluetooth converted for £125, but the kit used, looks a bit cheap and nasty.

It certainly looks like it. The 'cassette' door says "Media" on it.

I was considering one for my old Mercedes, but I've decided I'll probably go to Continental, because the lights are orange not red.

In retrospect I think I was lucky with the Esprit. In 4 years it never let me down or acted in any temperamental way. I'm sure somewhere out there is its evil twin brother where everything was wonky. It had full oxblood red leather which was exactly like my bedroom poster car. Before I bought it I'd had 3 Fiat X1/9s in a row and this felt like suddenly moving up the ladder onto a totally different level. I've subsequently had a couple of other Esprits, a GT3 and a V8 but they never had the same sense of awe for me.

I probably didn't give the Midget much of a chance to shine. I imagine the one I drove around Lancashire for a weekend was just lethargic and drafty as the one I bought and guess the brakes were just as bad and the handling was as, err, interesting. On the right day and in the right place it was great. I should just have left it at that.

I'd have another Turbo Esprit tho!! biggrin

Just had a Continental fitted - looks like it could’ve been fitted at production…

Not yet had chance to put it through its paces but was recommended to me by the indy Porsche dudes I use - apparently these are a favourite with those with transaxles for both looks and ability

That’s lovely. The thin-band whitewalls really suit it.

I do like a TR6 - great memories of my uncle’s BRG TR6 hitting three figures down Cribbs Causeway, pre-development, and then scooting round the left-hander at the bottom.

And saw one out and about today too - was driving so no pic.
