I drove a 944S2 as a hobby car for 12 years from 1998 to 2010, averaging about 6,500 miles a year over that period and can confirm they're absolutely capable of daily duties. Mine was reasonably dry inside but they can leak, not least through the big glass hatch and the rear lights. As you've seen they can also rust despite the galvanised shell but suffer less than most of their contemporaries.
