A greedy mate of mine has one stashed in his loft and won't let me have it, the rotter, his Dad bought it new and never got round to using it...!

Ah, yes. Vertical doors. Doors like windows. Deep sills.

Nearly 3 since it's MOT expired suggests that 560 should go in the Classics rotting thread.

There's an ad for one in the latest Classic & Sportscar and it comes with a rare hardtop. How the heck does that work with those doors?

The same as it works on any convertible with a hardtop. Open door. Get in. Or out, depending on where you were when you opened the door.

Apparently they were very heavy and this speeded their demise. Plus, as the sills had to be deep enough to accommodate the retracted door, convenience was sacrificed as well. Not a good day in the design office.

"Boss! Invisible doors!"
"How do you get in and out?"
"With difficulty."
"I like it. Draw it up and then have ten prototypes built. And call marketing, they're going to love it."

I went in one with a hardtop in Germany some years ago, and I don't recall any issues getting in or out.

It was good and eye catching. I wonder why it wasn't taken up?

The industry standard reason, surely? Poor ROI.

They handled sweetly and looked cool but underneath they were just a standard 325i. At nearly £40k you'd have to try very hard to avoid an Esprit, 20v Audi Quattro or Porsche 944 for similar money - bone fide sports cars.

Since the door dropped down, presumably you'ld have to lower the window each time you wanted to get out. That's what I'm puzzled about.

According to this short video, it looks as if opening the door automatically drops the window as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLGMQ6WG9Kc

I am an older member of PH, and my memory isn't always strong - in addition I have mental blackouts verging on dementia. smile.

For some reason I had it in my mind that the Z1 was an open roadster ( similar to the Renault Spyder) and had no side windows. In my imagination the hardtop had fixed windows and the driver would have to stoop down through the little gap where the door had dropped! Really - that is how my mind worked. Time for some of my tablets...........
