Left to die/rotting? - It's MOT'd until February 2023 and taxed until April 2023, so still very much in use!

You think this a "chequered" MOT history? :
https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/?_ga=2.891161...confused

There is absolutely nothing whatsoever in that MOT history that is seriously concerning, or suggesting that the car is in any way dodgy.

Over the years it has had failures for:

February 2022:Repair immediately (major defects):

Nearside Stop lamp(s) not working (4.3.1 (a) (ii))

February 2018:Reason(s) for failure:

Offside Obligatory mirror seriously deteriorated, affecting the rear view (8.1.2a)

February 2016:Reason(s) for failure:

Anti-lock braking system warning lamp does not illuminate (3.4.1b)

February 2015:Reason(s) for failure:

Nearside Rear Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
Offside Rear Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)

February 2013:Reason(s) for failure:

Offside Rear Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)

March 2012:Reason(s) for failure:

Power steering pipe(s) or hose(s) leaking (2.3.3b)

October 2007 [i]Reason(s) for failure:[i]

Offside Headlamp aim too far to the right (1.8)
Parking brake is not capable of being maintained in operation by direct mechanical action only (3.1.2)

September 2006:Reason(s) for failure:

Nearside Rear Seat belt locking mechanism does not secure or release (5.2.5a)
Offside Stop lamp not working (1.2.1b)
Nearside Rear Upper Suspension arm has excessive play in a pin/bush (2.4.G.2)

It's advisories over the years are pretty much all old car minor issues. There is nothing about any structural corrosion, or any serious defects that would be seriously expensive to put right.

If you think that's a "chequered" MOT history, and something to be concerned about, I strongly suggest you never buy a BMW E38 7 series!

Still has its original number plates on it, which is a nice but overlooked touch.

I am assuming this is definitely an SE and not a base, given the rear parking sensors and alloys on it. Next thing to ponder over is whether it had the "business pack" - CD changer, mobile phone, possibly a TV if it was for a guy who took himself and his car that seriously.

As was typical with BMWs and speaking from first-hand experience, the original dealer number plates would be too poor quality to withstand water ingress.

It can be an MOT failure, so there's the potential someone fails this one and the original plate(s) get binned and replaced with post-Septemvber 2001 style plates.

I also had a 1991 J-reg Ford Escort with original dealer plates that failed its MOT for the same reason even though the ingress wasn't bad at all. My father just listened to the mechanic and the rear plate was disposed of. I would've kept hold of it personally and possibly tried to repair.

Mine is still wearing a set from 2001, the fourth car they’ve been on. They are starting to fall apart but are still legal. The plates on my Golf date from 2005

Thanks preacher man, I know all about elderly BMWs - I have two. I said nothing about whether it was of concern or structural - by "chequered" I meant it's not representative of an armoured & probably chauffeured car, as the previous poster described. Try quoting all the post, instead of just selected parts.

You can get new plates with the old-style wider font and get the dealer details accurately reproduced as well, I have some on my 944. They look great and improve the car no end.

Is that in Newmains in Wishaw, if it is there used to be a Vauxhall VX 4/90 and a Victor estate, both in similar condition that sat alongside it.
10 points to you.
It is in Newmains.
I knew I recognized it as soon as I saw the photo.

I've not been down past there in years, I take it the other two cars are gone now.

There have been quite few Landies and Rangies, in this Barmouth yard over the years. They've had a clear out but kept these three.

Could easily be. Mine is about the same age. All the bits to keep these running are both available and affordable.

I blanked out the number plate on this for a reason.....it's not just some rotting old wreck...

This is my late father's old car. I tracked it down to its current owners in Skegness. Apparently the clutch failed a couple of years ago and it was parked up, then the MOT ran out at the end of 2020 and it has been sitting ever since.

After a little bit of negotiation, It is now mine.

Attempted to start it, no joy. Battery was the most toasted battery I have ever come across.

Attempted to push it, no joy!

I have a decent electric winch on my trailer so used that to drag it into the road (some horrible noises from the seized brakes) and then winch it onto the trailer.

I discovered at this point that one of the front springs had snapped and was contributing to the horrible noises...

But all loaded up and ready to go home with it....

It's fair to say that it left its mark.....

Edit: Put a battery on it this morning, (checked oil etc) let the fuel pump run for 30 seconds, then tried to start it - 3 turns of the engine and it burst into life and settled down to a smooth idle immediately! Result. Very little smoke initially and then none.

No surprise that there is an ABS warning light on, the broken spring seems to have taken out the wheel sensor wiring.
