That's not exactly in keeping with the idea behind this thread though is it?

That's a picture for a thread entitled: "Small old cars dwarfed by large old cars"

Just by way of a change, cars are getting larger but some things are shrinking:
mystifies me TBH since while they seem to be shrinking we're all growing frown

An MX5 mk1 is a dainty little thing, as demonstrated here:

But even it looks big next to a Sprite:

Now someone get me an Elan I can park it next to biggrin

One could argue that these two are part of the same evolutionary blood line. Little and large.
Like your style Hutch, 2 very nice cars indeed.

Let's be honest here, a Lotus/Caterham 7 is roughly the size of a bath tub with wheels attached! - Everything dwarfs it!
What do you mean?

Small though the Mk 1 MX-5 is, it still dwarfs the Elan it was based on. I parked mine next to one in the at Castle Combe paddock a few years back, but forgot to take a photo.

Actually the MX-5 is one of the few cars that hasn't got fatter over the years, the new Mk 4 is hardly bigger.

Are they based on the Elan? I thought the development team run a fleet of MGBs to get the feel of a British sports car?

Quite clearly the body design has always been based on the Elan. I don't know about the mechanicals.

I think Mazda have made no secret of wanting to make an Elan for the new age. They even had one on their stand at the "25 years of the MX-5" display at Goodwood a couple of years ago

I expect Mazda were looking at the commercial success of the MG as a 'model' rather than the technical or aesthetic side. I've always seen the aesthetics of the MX5 as a Elan for the modern era.
