While we're on the subject of film cars, how 60's is this?

A few on location shots in and around San Francisco, filming 'Bullitt' in March / April '68...
I hope Bill Hickman can see where he's going...!
Excellent, not seen that before.I hope Bill Hickman can see where he's going...!
That's the bit just after Bill puts on the his seat belt and floors it across the red light, turning left against the traffic onto Chestnut Street near where Bimo's 365 is. You can just see the Mustang behind the white Belvedere.

I didn't read anything about a link to the problems. From what I can gather it was on the way to the factory at Broughton, which is the site that the Airbus factory is now on. Not sure where it was coming from. The page I found this copy of the photo suggests it is a Comet 2.
I think you're right about that droopsnoot. Seems Comet 1 were more or less prototypes and the '2' was the service aircraft. The crashes were to do with fatigue fractures at the corners of squared windows so they were changed to round ones. Testing was away in the south so this one wasn't involved.Edited by droopsnoot on Tuesday 9th April 19:25
But are we saying that ALL Comets were shipped like that?

My brother spends quite a bit of time in SF, I ought to nip over with him sometime and do a locations trawl.
My best mate who I've known since my Mini days in 80/81, as he used to work in Pinner Green branch of Ripspeed, and I was a regular customer.....emigrated to San Fran area back in 2002, and I've visited many times since, and have done the full on 'Bullitt tour' in the hire car on several occasions, much to the annoyance of the then missus at the time I couldn't quite get the Chevy Impala hire car to do as impressive a rolling burnout at the junction of Larkin and Chestnut though.
There is a great link with all the locations - which I'll post if I can find it again.

I don't know, I haven't had chance to look for any more information. I mentioned it to a chap today who commented that Broughton still only makes wings, and perhaps the fuselage was going there to have the wings added. P5BNij said:

Yes got it now, it's right where Lao Schifrin's score stops and the V8s take over for a bit, as seen from McQueen's viewpoint. My brother spends quite a bit of time in SF, I ought to nip over with him sometime and do a locations trawl. I wonder if Jacqueline Bisset's 356 is still around...

I initially thought it may have come from Woodford but they did their own assembly and, at the time of the Comet, Broughton were manufacturing the lot as far as I know, so the wings and fuselage would have been made and married up on site.
I still actually do a lot of work for Airbus but no longer go on to site any more as I'm old and tired. I am however going to try to find out if I can speak to the right people

In this 1950's view taken at Chester Cross, Pickford's 1946, Bath registered Scammell,, is hauling a DeHavilland DH106 Comet fuselage which was subcontracted out to Shorts in Belfast and then shipped over to Ellesmere Port docks and taken by road via Chester to the DeHavilland aircraft factory at Broughton. where the Comet was finally assembled.
I had no idea that Shorts built any of these. Johnspex said:

Thanks aero
Here it is.....http://www.rjsmith.com/bullitt-locations.html
This was written the year my mate emigrated and I remember finding it online, the year after, just before my first visit over there.......can't believe its not far off 20 years ago now!!
Just to muddy the waters about Comet fuselages in Chester...
In 1957, on a university 'field trip' I visited the De Havilland factory at Hatfield, where my ageing memory insists that I saw the first of the re-designed Comet 4 production aircraft being assembled - fuselages, wings and all - there.
I am confident about the year, and the location, and the fact that they were passenger craft, not fighters, so were these really Comets ?
